g5 pbooks /ibooks soon ?

Recommended Posts

According to Taiwan-based DigiTimes, Apple will start receiving shipments of G5-based notebooks in the second quarter of this year. Original Equipment Manufacturers Quanta Computer and Asustek have purportedly been tapped to build Apple's designs, and both are supposedly shipping the new notebooks at some time in the second quarter of this year. Apple surely can't be pleased that this news has leaked out of Taiwan, accurate or not. I was surprised when I saw the data because just this week Apple's VP of Worldwide Sales and Operations said in the company's quarterly conference call that a G5 notebook "would be the mother of all thermal challenges." Thus, we cannot be 100% certain that these products are this far along in development, but it does strike us as curious that Asustek is reported as building both iBooks and iBook G5s.

they will only speed bump them, G5 Processors are not attainable since Apples standards are to high, they could do it but the fan in the iBook's and Powerbooks would have to be on all the time (Something Apple does not want to do / ever has) unless they force some kind of "Smart Underclocking" where it would reduce the clockspeed and electricity to the chips when the extra power is not needed but if they did that as soon as you use something like Photoshop and the Chip is brought to full power the fan would come on and stay on much longer then it does with the current G4 chips.

For that reason there wont be a G5 powerbook / iBook for a very very long time.

WinMacLin, that's nice to hear, since my PowerBook is arriving tomorrow. :p

It's hard to decide when I should purchase Apple product, because Apple always strickly keep it veiled until the d-day.

I'm in dilema of whether or not I should get iPod photo to replace my dead 3G iPod... :(

AFAIK, they have had no luck in cooling the G5 enough to put it in a laptop form factor. I think it is more likely we would see dual G4s then possibly a Cell processor, skipping the G5. Of course, this would require Cells to be used in the Powermac first.

All idle speculation on my part of course, but if you go get the datasheets for the the FX970 (G5 chip) and the Toshiba/IBM cell, you'll see what I mean.

Dougal.

I really hope they dont switch to cell, a whole new architecture would mean the os would have to be changed and all the programs too, thats just a kick up the arse, it will probably be full of bugs.

I wanted to get the current powerbook, or hopefully if they revise to dual g4's.

sadly my money didnt come though though so my powerbook purchase is on hault till 2006.

    • Wow, imagine you dump hundreds of hours into completing things and unlocking stuff and you lose it all. Back in the day when cheats were built into games, you could at least unlock things again that way without spending hundreds of hours again. But those days are long gone for some reason as no one builds cheats into games anymore. So it's even more painful that studio that's on its 6th installment **** it up so badly.
    • Spotify finally removes the disco ball app icon in the latest update by Ivan Jenic Image: Spotify Spotify has just released an update that removes its now infamous disco ball icon. The update reverts the app icon to the familiar flat green logo after weeks of mixed reactions online. The icon arrived on May 13 as part of the company's 20th anniversary celebration and was always intended to be temporary, though Spotify only confirmed that after the backlash started. The disco ball took the internet by storm, as the reception was split. A vocal group of users called it ugly and disorienting, with some iOS users noting that the 3D glowing effect made the app look like it was stuck mid-update. On the other end, the icon picked up a following of its own. Its retro, three-dimensional look immediately stood out against the flat, minimalist aesthetic that has dominated app design for years. It even started a small movement, spawning what people started calling "discomorphism," a mashup of disco and skeuomorphism. Other brands started posting disco ball versions of their own logos, probably in an effort to ride the wave of memes that flooded the internet during late May. Spotify has had a turbulent relationship with its user base lately. Besides the disco ball icon, which certainly wasn't appreciated by everyone, the company has also received backlash for its willingness to include AI-generated music on its platform. On May 17, Spotify promised the old icon would return “in a few weeks.” And now it looks like that time has finally arrived. So, whether you liked the disco ball or it made you uncomfortable, it’s now gone for good. The next time you update the Spotify app on your phone, the old, flat-design icon will return.
