Logitech Mobile Freedom Bluetooth headset.

Recommended Posts

A bit of Prologue on this. I was thinking of using a BT headset in Skype for sometime now. But was not really keen on spending ~$70 for a decent one. Well thanksgiving gave a perfect deal :D and as cheap as I am, I bought one from CompUSA for $10 (after rebates).

So here is my short review. Going to use images mostly, since there are only few things I can say about a headset.

Click on images for larger size.

1. Since I thought of this review after I opened the package, all you get to see is the badly twisted packaging. :p

Other package contents,

- AC power adapter

- Quick start guide (skimpy but sufficient)

- 1 year limited warranty :D (this is what they state on it)

- 2 additional soft foam ear pads. (not mentioned on actual packaging, but found inside mine)

2. Specs as given on package

- Headset & handsfree Bluetooth profiles

- Bluetooth v1.2 compliant

- Talk time: up to 7 hours

- 250 hours standby

- Weight: 23g (feels a bit heavy on ear)

- Range: 33'

I can't really comment on battery life since my use is intermittent. The manual mentions it takes 4 hrs for full recharge. The battery is not user serviceable but is supposed to last for lifetime of the headset.

I found the range to be around 50' with minimal loss of signal (when used with iBook, my cell does not have BT).

3. The headset itself is pretty comfortable to wear but I find it difficult to get on my ears. I am not used to clip-on stuff.

There are total 3 buttons on this. 2 for volume control (C & D) and one (F) which is multifunctional and used for power on/off, answer/hang up & pairing. This button also has a LED (B) or rather the LED is a button :D which lights either red or blue and flashes for various states. A detailed list of all states is given in the manual.

4. Headset looks nice from all angles. and I find it a nice combo of form+function. Views from different angles.

5. The headset can go on either ear by simply switching the clip by 180. The clip is made from rubber and is flexible enough to last some rough use. Also the clip base can be rotated to adjust angle.

6. Initially I was not able to find the charging port  and it turned out (after referring the manul) that it was hidden behind the clip hinge.

Charger itself is pretty small. Smaller than Nokia travel charger.

7. The pairing procecss was easy thanks to OS X's excellent wizard.

- You hold down button F for 4 secs for power on/off.

- 10 secs to activate pairing mode. LED flashes red/blue when ready for pairing.

- The numeric code 0000 required for pairing is provided in manual.

- Once paired, it flashes faint blue and is subtle.

8. After that all I had to do was select headset as audio input/output device under Skype's preferences.

And I was up & running in less than 10 minutes after opening the package. Surprisingly Skype still rings through laptop speakers when somebody calls me (or when I place a call). This is a good design on Skype's part I think.

Edit:

9. LOL forgot one important aspect. The sound quality is top notch both through speaker & mic and breaks a little at about 50'.

Well thats all folks. Hope you find this useful. ;)

i have the exact same bluetooth headset and loved it, ... while i towrked. I got it and started using it everyday, then after 4 months it stopped holding a charge- i would turn it on after a long charge and it would lose power after 10 minutes! after a couple of days i called up logitech and they were kind enough to send me a new one even though i couldnt find my reciept, got my new one- happy with it, and then exactly 3 months later i got the same problem! now i called up logitech a couple of days ago and they told me they cant do anything without a reciept this time, doh! I went through all my emails and finally found the reciept, so im gunna call them back, BUT i have a bad feeling that im gunna have to do this all opver again in 3-4 months-

Theres a reason its soo cheap, its a piece of crap.

woah  thats bad news. But its ok with me. :) Now I've figured out it works good, I can always buy a better one if needed. I just had a curiosity to try this and hence was not keen on spending $70+ on something I won't probabaly use regularly.

And I better keep that receipt handy. :D

    • Frankly, I blame whoever is writing such articles. "A big improvement/update and/or new feature is now available to everyone! Also, use this unofficial tweak tool to enable it because it actually isn't available to you yet officially and might not in fact even be entirely ready or whatever, hence why it is perhaps not enabled for you*. But it's great and you should enable it!" I mean there's nothing wrong with sharing info about some feature you might need to enable via unofficial means, of course. It's just that these articles tend to essentially end up being two news pieces in one, and one of them tends to be a bit misleading. (*Yes, yes, the "it's a controlled rollout!" thing. Not a fan of that one either. The argument, not the actual rollout.)
    • Thank you. Will do. I read in the release notes that editor config might be at play here.
    • Actually, I think even Microsoft doesn't know how to control it
    • OpenAI is making Codex more useful in Chrome and the cloud by Pradeep Viswanathan OpenAI's Codex now has more than 5 million users, up nearly 4x from earlier this year. To further accelerate Codex's growth among developers, OpenAI today announced that it has agreed to acquire Ona, a company that builds secure cloud execution and orchestration technology for developers. Ona will enable developers to run Codex with persistent and controlled cloud infrastructure for long-running agentic workflows. Right now, most Codex execution happens locally on developers' laptops and PCs, and the agents work continuously for hours. Through Ona, OpenAI aims to make Codex agents keep working for days without being tied to a user’s local machine or an active session. This will be an important capability for enterprises that want to deploy AI agents in production while maintaining control over infrastructure, data, security boundaries, credential scope, logging, and review workflows. Like any acquisition, the deal is still subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until the deal closes, OpenAI and Ona will continue to operate as separate companies. After closing, Ona’s team will join the Codex team to improve developer workflows. Alongside the Ona acquisition announcement, OpenAI today introduced a few Codex updates. Developers can now save Codex rate limit resets and use them later instead of losing them when they are not needed immediately. OpenAI is also adding a referral option where users can invite a friend to Codex and get a saved rate limit reset. OpenAI today also announced a developer mode for browser use in Chrome and the Codex in-app browser. With this mode, Codex can use the Chrome DevTools Protocol to debug web apps, inspect pages, and work more directly with browser-based development workflows. Developers can use this when they want Codex to profile JavaScript, inspect console output and network traffic, examine web page states including the DOM and applied styles, and more.
