Dave Perry: 360, PS3 to eventually steal Wii gamers

It's all about the graphics, stupid.

Dave Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment, creator of Earthworm Jim, and Director of a community-made MMO through Acclaim Games codenamed Top Secret, gave a somewhat different take on the Wii control system in a recent interview with Disposible Media (warning - big download).

After being asked about his views on the importance of simplicity of control in a console context, he stated that while the Wii is a good starting point to encourage the all-important focus on better gaming interfaces, it isn't necessarily the best. Speaking of unique approaches to control systems, Perry said, "Y?know, I?ve followed controllers for a long time. I remember in the late eighties there was a machine called the Konix. The interesting thing was it was a steering wheel, but could take off the steering wheel and pull up some handlebars for a bike, or you could pull the handlebars right up and have it as an aeroplane yoke, and so on and so on."

More damningly, Perry added, "My point is, is that the Nintendo Wii isn?t the final solution to that sort of interactive interface. I think we?ll always see more and more interesting approaches to interface, and I really don?t think the Wii is the ultimate solution to that."

To Perry at least, graphics are key to capturing the hearts and minds of gamers. After debunking the Wii Remote as the be-all, end-all solution to interface flexibility, he added, "But I also think that the 360 and PS3?s graphical power is essential in attracting the Wii?s userbase. The fact is, gamers are attracted to beautiful looking games, they always have been, even back when the Konix was thought up. When a game comes out - a game like a Halo or something, something they haven?t seen before - they?ll drop everything and they?ll drop their Wii controllers when it does."

He is regurgitating the same argument we've heard for a year now. However, the Wii is pounding both systems in sales. The only thing that will currently lead would-be buyers to other systems is the fact that Nintendo can't keep them on the shelves which only shows how high the demand is. People are only going to be buying a 360 if like they RMA-ing their system as well, lol.

I think there's gamers who play the game for what it is and then there's eye candy ###### who play the game for what it looks like. Nintendo has been doing great so far, and with such sweet titles coming up (Mario Galaxy/Smash Brothers Brawl/MP3) I doubt they'll be doing any less well. I personally don't wanna play the same recycled game again just because the graphics were upgraded, and I think that's the mentality of the average Wii gamer.

I don't think the success of any of the consoles are as cut and dry as all of the critics make it seem. Sure, many gamers love graphics (I know I do), but I also own a Wii. It's great, it's fun, especially playing with friends. But in the end, I think the gamers who buy a 360/PS3 are probably just as likely to buy a Wii, despite the graphics. It all comes down to money, if you have to have your realistic graphics, then you have to be willing to pay for it. If you don't care, but love Sony or have always owned a Playstation, you'll (eventually) buy a PS3 if you haven't already. If you love Halo, and now almost any game for that matter, you'll buy a 360. And you know what? You'll probably end up dealing with whatever flaws you may find... in any console. Besides, a lot of hard core gamers will have more than one console anyway. Why don't I? Because I'm not willing to fork over another $500 minimum just to see the sweat drip off of my opponent's face. If I had the money and was able to spend it, like a lot of other people, I probably would.

There are two different niches here. One's the gamer who like HD graphics and loves to master gameplay. The other's the one who wants to have fun and socially interact: essentially the chicks and the kids.

While these niches may overlap, they still are different and each console caters for one of them.

Me and my mates have found that one Wii or a few Wii's between us all is enough.

When a party goes on the whoever wants brings the Wii.

As it stands right now we have about 5 or 6 Wii's I think it is and only 1 or 2 getting used.

Even now though we're going back to good ol Pro Evo instead of playing the Wii at all :pinch:

The new Pro Evo will kill our Wii playing completely :p

Aye, which I think he misses completely. The controler is easy to use which in turn makes it more appealing to the casual consumer. I can put a 360 pad in my GFs hands and she just gets frustrated ends up putting it down. But give her the wii and she plays it alone for hours!

I can't see either console stealing wii lovers at the moment many of them just can't use the pads! :)

I own an Xbox 360 and my brother has a Wii, we're happy, he plays Test Drive while i play Golf! Thats the way we always do it, buy 1 console each then find a mate with the 3rd one.....none of my mates has a ps3 yet...and they dont want one

we can all admit, if graphics didn't matter we'd all be amazed when pong 2.0 with not one BUT 2 BALLS CAME OUT!!!! ... yeah right

i know plenty of girls who have no problem with ps2/xbox controllers ... who can count out 3rd parties or even sony making similar simple controllers for ps3, nobody. time will tell. But imo, really do you see yourself still enjoying Wii sports 3 years from now after several million times of playing the same boring game with meh graphics when everyone else enjoys large HD beautiful games with equal interactivity ? highly unlikely.

Graphics drive consoles.. simple as that. Always have, and always will.. Thats why new ones are created.. Otherwise we would still be sitting on the xbox and PS2... the 360 and PS3 only enabled HD-output really, turned the console into and entertainment hub.

They are a portable direct-loading, entertainment center.

The 360 and PS3 are BOTH HD-DVD players with media capiblities.

The wii is a kids gaming system. Its only selling well cause of 2 things:

one its dirt cheap

two its different

VERY few gamers play games anymore for the challenge, they play it for the cut-scenes, action, reality. The PS3 and Xbox360 wins hands down on these, with the 360 having the edge due to vibration feedback, 3yr manufacturers extended warranty, xbox live, huge title selection and integration with the microsoft operating system. PS3 is catching up but still needs a LOT of work on both the system firmware and title side of things.

For those of you who really think power/graphics is what has always sold video game systems, read about the Neo Geo, the Saturn or even compare the success of the Nintendo DS against the PSP.

Graphics always come second place to "overall experience", it's always been like that. The PS3 may be a fine piece of hardware but until they release some really good and original games on it, it won't be worth its weight of metal.

Well if Wii Sports is it for 3 years no I don't see myself playing it. I've got a hunch that's not the only thing to be good that will have come out.

The wii is a kids gaming system.

Turning out to be the exact opposite.

i played the wii and had it at my house for a few days and it is boring as hell after 10 mins, 360 + ps3 are alot better

Heh. Well can't argue with a couple days experience.

Uhm...I doubt that. I mean if I wanted to see cut scenes and endless action I would pop in a movie. Gameing is and always will be about the interaction between the player and their on screen representative.

I dont know if "steal" is the right word. Growing up I always had Genesis and SNES, n64 and PS1, PS2 and GC, and so on, and one never "stole" me from the other. If a good game came out for a system, I would play it. It's not like I'm going to perminantly abandon a console once another console has a cool game :I

The Wii has proven a terrible purchase for me. It was great at a few parties and barbecues, friends loved it and bought it. Now all of them are just sitting there collecting dust.

Except for mine as I went back to a re-released 2.5 year old GC games... RE4. Sad, it's the best game on the system.

I know. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was garbage.

or not.

the whole point of video games (IMH) is that we try to dive in to a world we cant explore in real life (that is without serious risks and consequences)

engaging in war combat, living the thug life, stealing and jacking cars, saving the world, being a super hero. so instead of imagining these things we can actually visualize it and get some sort of visual feedback in the form of AI. so ever since the beginning we've been making progress by making this world 'more' real and blurring the line between the console and real life...eventually leading to what we call today as 'Virtual Reality'. the Wii had a real good idea incorporating real live action montion sensing, however what it did was draw back on the main features that make the game seem life like.

Gamers want tense situations and want to make decisions under pressuring conditions. They want to be in danger and move about quickly with precision and strategy. In man to man combat situations to whole military operations, these situations are tense and you can actually worry about something so much that even if you lose you dont lose anything in real life. i mean games arent about 'fun' its about the experience. and i really don't think its possible with the wii. not for the average gamer anyway.

i mean those ads they show on tv, the whole family coming over and playing the wii...thats cool and all when you have little cousins over or something...but when you're playing with some of your closest friends...its all about adrenaline...who can be top dog, the most manliest and deadliest. and this is not possible with Wiis cute characters and block scenery.

wow. and im not even a gamer. occasional ps3ing here and there but wow. i cant believe i wrote that. sorry for my lengthly posts, im trying to improve my debating and arguing skills haha

Haha indeed.. reminds me of my Soldier of Fortune 2 knife fights :shifty: or the run to get the grenade launcher and make it out alive without the others seeing..

i mean games arent about 'fun' its about the experience.

I don't even know where to start with that. So the game isn't about fun but rather it is about an experience, which would therefore rule out a fun experience? I'm lost with your logic. Games are meant to be fun. The Wii may not be the most intense graphical platform out there, but the console introduces a whole new level of interaction in the gameplay. If that doesn't make the game experience better, I don't know what will. Graphics don't make a game more entertaining. Quake 4, Doom 3, FarCry, they all had great graphics. However, they were all boring as they could be. Even their MP sections were awful. Where those games fun because they had good graphics? No.

I'm tired of formula based games. The Wii gives the gamer, or non-gamer even, a new level of interaction that will add to the replay value of a game and make it far more exciting than just pressing buttons on old controllers.
