Vista Thumbnails for FLV and MKV/MKA.

Recommended Posts

Hey i just thought i'd post this, i created some reg files to enable vista to generate thumbnails for FLV's and MKV/MKA.

They were lacking on my system, so i just whipped them up.

:)

Just copy and paste them into notepad and save them as .reg files. :).

doesn't work for me with ffdshow. which codecs do you use?

FFDSHOW tryout the latest, what one doesnot work for you? you might have to set it to open with WMP.

Thanks! Does this slow down the folder loading any more than .avi .wmv, etc.?

I don't experience any slow down normally, so i cannot say. but i assume it would only take a bit to load the thumbnails

Doesn't work, is there anything I need to do to put my system back to how it was?

thats really odd. I just remembered i have the K-lite codec pack installed. But thats it.

You might wanna check if you can play the flv/mkv in WMP first.

But to answer your question nope, if it's not affecting your pc. then theres nothing to be done. :)

I actually worked for me! Thx!

One thing thought, the preview snapshot seems to be taken at the very beginning of the movies, i want it to at least take a snapshot ~5-10 second into a movie like the normal avi, wmv snapshots. Can i change some parameters to do this?

bump looking for an answer ... done a lot of internet searching and i've found most people have just given up and are using folder.jpg as a solution .. this doesn't cut it for me. Anyone have a better solution?

After clearing thumbs.db files and shifting folders a few times to clean memory cache, this worked for mkv files for me... but not flv.

I'm also keen to know if it's possible to do this for .mp4 .3gp .mov .qt .ogm files... all of which play fine in WMP on my system?

What are the key features of these reg files? Can we get commented versions which might enable us to develop more?

After clearing thumbs.db files and shifting folders a few times to clean memory cache, this worked for mkv files for me... but not flv.

Additional... It has actually given me thumbnails for both mkv and flv in Media Center. So it's only Explorer that isn't now showing flv thumbs.

BTW I am running Vista Home Premium x64, with ffdshow x64 and XviD x64. (In case you didn't know, x64 OS will not show thumbs with x86 codecs, because explorer and Media Center are x64 apps, they can't call x86 libraries... read codex. But you can play files in WMP with x86 codecs, provided you start the x86 version which comes with the OS.)

I'm using the flv, mkv, mp4, ogg etc splitters from MPC HomeCinema... also the x64 versions, obviously.

Did anyone figure out how to change the offset time? I'm running Vista x64, so I can't and don't want to use haali, which has the ability to change the offset time.

Isnt there something that adds thumbnails for ALL video types?

If there is then please tell me! I setup the mkv file extension to act as an .avi file (i.e. video clip), but there is no preview for them. The reg edit posted works, but it seems to grab the first frame, which is often black.

  • 1 month later...

Hey all, sorry for the lack of posting about this.

But i did notice the first frame thing, but i cant seem to fix it. SO i'm now using haali media splitter for the MKV thumbs, and i'm trying to make a reg patch for OGM ones now... so far.... not working at all lol.

BTW i think the CCCP enables thumbnails for a few formats, including OGM and MP4. but i would have to get my hands on some exports of someone that uses them. I cant stand codec packs.

For video files you can use Thumbnailer from CapTrue. It is a WMP plugin, and when you using it you can assign ANY frame of your video as a thumbnail. Works with .mov either.

More info http://captrue.com/news/thumbnailer-1.5-release.html

Actually this is shareware program, but the thumbnails generation is not limited.

    • All it does is use the CPU more efficiently during boot to speed up boot times. That's it. Yawn....
    • It's not a one or the other kind of thing. Software should run efficiently, and the operating system should appropriately manage the CPU clocks. You could have the best most optimized software on earth, and it will still run faster if the CPU does a better job of boosting as needed. All this is doing is pre-boosting the CPU based on user actions, instead of waiting for the normal detection mechanism to kick in. If the OS knows it is about to need more CPU, why shouldn't it use that knowledge? It's the same idea of downshifting before you try to pass someone, instead of just burying your foot into the peddle and waiting for the transmission to figure out what you want to do.

    • There really isn't anything magical about the low latency profile, other OS's do this as well. All they're doing is using your CPUs boost clock options in a more smarter way.
    • So we shouldn't have the option because of people using their laptops on battery? OK? LOL
