Hello, I'm new to the forums. My name is David. I love to yap so you'll probably see me a little more often here. I'm stationed at Fort Polk but I'm in Iraq right now. Ask me anything you like, just don't ask for money!

Welcome to Neowin!

Been here a while from your join date I see, just not really much into posting? :)

Welcome to Neowin!

I've had a lot going on. My daughter just turned 1, I got deployed, trying to do college and run a home business on top of being in the Army.... it's a little difficult to keep up with everything you know. But, I find myself having more time lately so I want to put my head back in the game.

wear sunscreen!

In reply to your earlier comment about things other than what the news tells you, you could probably google anything you want. There's actually several popular writers and journalists who talk a great deal about what's going on in Iraq that you're not being told about, but I shouldn't mention them here.

A couple of things you might not know, but should probably be interested in, are EOD ( Energy on Demand ) and Laser Avenger (the Boeng HWMVV mounted laser / 50 cal turret.)

The ARMY has also been developing a robotic exoskeleton which so far has been able to assist in lifting up to and beyond 400 lbs without breaking a sweat.

Yeah would be interesting to hear what your up to of course to a legal requirement :p

Of course, legal requirements aside, you could probably learn anything you needed to know by searching.. once again. (I'm not f**king advertising) Google... but! I can tell you this...

Our purpose right now is to help provide 3 things. Security, Economic Stimulation, and Infrastructure.

Please feel free to ask any questions that come to mind. I'll answer the best I can, OPSEC willing.

hows all that working out?

all the news i hear/find is saying "iraq's a failure and that you guys should come home."

As a disclaimer, anything I say, ever, is my personal opinion and nothing more than that. I am not the author of, nor do I represent the organizations, websites, people, or literature that I quote. The statements and views expressed are of my own and do not represent the ARMY or any other Federal or any government.

That being said... let's think about "The War on Terrorism". Yes I got the nice little ribbon that says I fought in the war on terrorism. Yes I've been deployed twice. Yes, we're still in this place... appearantly for nothing. That's the case for public eyes anyway. On the flipside, if you do your research, appearantly all of the recently retired generals that participated in this war stated something to the effect of... "It's pointless"... "all of our allies have either left us or are pulling out as we speak"... "we've made our point it's time to go home"...

Not to speak badly of our President, he may well be a righteous man (doubtful due to the nature of recent administrations) but I simply do not see where he gets his foresight. You cannot win a war against an idea. Terrorism is a concept. It's an act of violence without cause or necessity to emphasize a political, social, or religious point. At least, that's the case for us. You can't kill everyone... and let's face it, if someone throws a bag of flaming dogs$!+ on your doorstep, you're probably going to throw something similar back. Well, we've been shoveling **it on that country for years, and now... 5 years later, we're still there, starting **it with locals and trying to run the country our way.

Now... things have died down a lot. News reports used to tell us about the latest Iraqi or Afghani that was tied up, gagged, beaten to a pulp, blindfolded and so forth. Well, I can tell you now, that just doesn't happen here. I can't speak for everyone but things have changed. We treat these people with respect, and believe it or not, most of the people here have a great endearment for us. I'm not just talking about the Iraqi Army, I'm talking about the local nationals. The people that live and work here.

Kids applaud us, the people love us. But, they all agree, we need to leave. There's no reason for us to hang around. The average soldier would probably agree (although I am not quoting anyone, so don't *#&$ing quote me on that). Why are we still here? Well our task is to provide a sense of security, stimulate economy, provide jobs, and assist in the reconstruction in their internal security and government infrastructure. Nobrainer right? Well, we've done all of that.

I can tell you, in simple terms. The soldiers don't want to be here (some do, there's always that guy [hero complex]) but no one really knows what we're here for anymore. Do some research. The british, pulling out. The Marines, almost gone. This crap is on the news. We're pretty much... it. So why are we still here? I don't want to say that three letter word that Americans hate so much, but.... there you have it.

Just a recap on the last few years... does anyone remember a promise made by our current administration? Something about current affairs, troops, other countries, prices on petrolium, jobs, economy... any of this coming back to you? Frankly, I'm done with the whole thing.

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
