Mirror's Edge (inspired by parkour and free running)

Recommended Posts

Mirror's Edge is an upcoming first-person action-adventure video game that is being developed by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE) for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows-based PCs. The game will be released on these platforms simultaneously in late 2008.

The game was announced by Electronic Arts on July 10, 2007 and will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3 with the addition of a new lighting solution, developed by DICE. The game has a realistic, brightly-coloured style and differs from other first-person perspective video games in allowing for a wider range of actions?such as sliding under barriers, tumbling, wall-running, and shimmying across ledges?and greater freedom of movement, in having no HUD, and in allowing the legs, arms, and torso of the character to be visible on-screen.

The game is set in a conformist dystopia in which communication is heavily monitored by a totalitarian regime, and so a network of runners, including the main character, Faith, are used to transmit messages while evading government surveillance.

from the video it looks like your goals are to follow the red objects or there red to help clarify what your supposed to do.

It's 'runner vision' which is a guideline for a method to cross certain parts where it isn't immediately obvious, or you don't think it's passable, or can't tell at the speed you're going. You're meant to conserve your momentum as much as possible in the game, so you can't stop and think 'Now how do I get to that rooftop?'

Also, it recreates what many people do when running/parkour-ing/extreme sport in general, where their brains highlight certain things to pay attention to.

Off topic, but what's with the new thing of padding the end of the video with blank frames to simulate HD on YouTube?
Plz ignore the blank video at the end, its simply where I pad the video with empty frames in order to distribute the bitrate to the actual video...therefore alot higher quality! The actual length is 1:55

Not sure how that would help tho? :s

Will this game be released simultaneously on all 3 platforms?

not sure.

but I assume youtube uses a max botrate for the compelte movie, but in a VBR style. so a 10 minute video for example can only be say 10 megs.

but if you fill the last 5 minutes with blank frames with practically have no data needed, just a few bytes. then you have effectively doubled the available size for the actual 5 minute clip. and thus a lot higher quality for the movie.

though HD it's not andit's not a correct term to use, HD would refer to the Resolution, you get better quality but not resolution.

Major flaw in the post. This game will not use unreal engine 3, it will be using the new Frostbite engine. As far as I can tell, the Frostbite engine (when used in in Battelfield) isn't as beautiful as CryEngine2, but i hope that by the time this game comes out, it will be that and more!

I'm a sucker for shader power. That video link really is beautiful too :)

    • I remember when all games had demos; it was a normal thing, not a limited time promotion.
