Darwin for x86

Recommended Posts

Xdarwin is comming out. an accelerated xserver for darwin/osx. does this mean that u can install this on the darwin package for the x86 systems?

you can download a developers edition of Darwin for the x86(that is quite stable i must add) from Darwin for Mac and x86, but when do we get to install the funky osx graphics on the x86?

i want the osx to work on my pc!

what are your thoughts people?

as the honourable gentlemen answered  , it is just console at the moment.

yea....

when x11 came out for osx, i was gonna download and try and install

but i got lazy

and it seem that x11 goes ONTOP of aqua so, i dont think it would have worked anyway.

the thing is tho,

if u can use terminal within osx, (bash etc.) then u must beable to use BASH alone...

but this xdarwin might enable x on darwin.

but even so,

anyone know of the source for aqua lying about?

Fortis: lol, i dont think you are going to find aqua anywhere, the only way your going to have a aqua like desktop is install x (if you can on darwin) and find a theme somewhere, i may be wrong but i really dont think apple have released aqua for darwin, or if they will release it

boo :pinch: thats sad.

dam.

but i want aqua!

does anyone know if there is anything remotly similar to aqua for x86.

themes are not enough

linux still dont "flow" as well as ekspii does...

erm.. isnt there like a wine for ekspii? like apart from cygwin?

which would let us use certain apps in ekspii.

nautilus would run great on ekspii..

can u compile gnome for win32? without using cygwin (too slow)

Hypothetically speaking, even if you did get darwin and X11 running what would you do with it. Maximize and minimize windows. I'm pretty sure you could compile "some" linux software but what's the point.

If apple ever got drunk enough and released aqua for X11 for the pc would people run it atop darwin!? No! They'd probably just run it atop their linux box.

I have suspicions that darwin for x86 is being kept alive because apple was/is thinking about selling hammer boxes and laptops.

if you want linux software for your mac, use fink. (http://fink.sourceforge.net) they've complied a ton of software to run on os x.

but to put this issue to rest.....and trust me, it gets brought up about once a week.... you ARE NOT going to see os X on your x86 boxes! *IF* apple ever moves over to the x86 platform, it will still run on a closed hardware platform. you won't be able to install os x on your dell, or your home built PC.

darwin is merely another incarnation of BSD. you're better off installing your favorite flavor of linux, or BSD. it's not like apple is going to release quartz, aqua, and all of the other parts of what makes up os X. ( http://developer.apple.com/macosx/architec...ture/index.html gives you a decent idea of what is going on here.)

please people, give it a rest. if you want os X, buy a mac.

I have read of ports of gnome for Win32. They typically require a bunch of support software (like many *nix ports, cygwin will probably be required along with an xserver, and possibly some other stuff).

Going from source is possible but if I were you, i would just go look for a packed install that's ready to double click.

(gnome and kde also run fine on os x - x11 if you're lucky enough to be running os x).
