like i downloaded Firefox and then it asked me to transfer it to the 'Applications' folder.

so i just dragged it and dropped it.

after that.. i double clicked firefox in the apps folder and dragged the firefox icon onto my dock making a shortcut.

but i when i run firefox.. a drive shows up on my desktop.

how do i get rid of it?

So what type of Mac did you get? :)

The problem that it sounds like you are having is your shortcut leads to a Disk Image, not to the application in your Applications folder. :) You will need to make sure you move the Application to the Applications folder, drag the Disk Image to the Trash and THEN open your Applications folder to drag the Application to your Dock.

EIther that or I'd suggest just using Safari, it it truly the best browser on OS X. (My opinion)

well im jut generaaly giving an example. Like im using windows messenger, yahoo messenger and firefox. And with all it has the same problem that it makes a disk image on the desktop

I already tried as u said of first dragging the dmg to the applications then ejecting it

But still when i run firefox or other application.. a disk image shows up on the desktop

Thats what I thought. ;)

Anyway, you don't drag the DMG to your Application Folder, the DMG is a Disk Image, not an Application. You want to drag the Application contained inside the DMG to the Applications Folder.

And if that doesn't work go into the hard drive, go into system tools or accessories and launch a terminal.

Type in the following :

sudo rm -rf

Hit enter.

This will purge all your temp files and also purge the firefox install (including unmounting).

Don't to this - it's bad. But it will remove your temp files and firefox :).
