Mass Effect not working

This is a rather odd problem. I just bought Mass Effect today for my computer and tried to play it, but during the opening scene after you name your character, it completely freezes about 10 seconds in. The music continues to play, but the screen is frozen and the entire computer becomes unresponsive. I had to hard reboot each time I tried to play it. I applied the 1.01 patch but that did nothing. I can't take the game back, so I hope someone can help me. Specs of my computer are in my sig.

Also, I looked through BioWare's forum for possible fixes, but nothing concrete has come up.

I had a problem with it crashing right after loading every time. It turned out I needed to turn off UAC in Vista for it to work. Not sure if your problem is the same, but you might want to try it.?

Try right click -> Run as administrator

Tried the above suggestions, but they didn't work. Is it possible the 4850 just has wonky drivers for now?
