ok so i realize that my acer aspire one is slooooow.... xp struggles to keep all my programs running at once and im just about getting used to actually closing the programs and start them up later when i need them again

so heres the question im wondering, assuming that i can install vista basic, like using a usb cdrom or bootable flash stick somehow, is it a good choice to go to ditch xp and go to vista this way? i like some of vista's features, like the receive window tuning, and superfetch

What are you upgrading from, XP Home or XP Professional? I think you actually might lose some features if you "upgrade" from XP Professional to Vista Home. (XP Professional is sorta equivalent to Vista Business)

Overall, I don't think Vista Basic is worth it. Better to stick with XP, & down the road upgrade your computer or get a new computer with Vista Business or Ultimate. Just my 2 cents..

im using the copy of xp which came preloaded on my aspire one... i never really used any of the business features of my old computer with xp pro or vista business... heck i cant even tell you want those business features are, all i do is use 3rd party programs to backup my things etc, so i dont think im going to be affected much from losing features...

does vista basic have the same requirements as xp?

The requirements are higher, but I don't think it's worth 'upgrading' to Vista Home Basic. I would rather use XP Home or XP Professional. I would recommend upgrading to Vista Home Premium, provided your PC meets the requirements.

Windows Vista requirements

I would say windows xp pro, with windows blinds. vista basic is not the nicest thing to look at. And xp pro is better for slower systems. What about installing Linux, i have a third machine with ubuntu and get good performace out of it.

some of the programs i use are windows-only... if i could find linux versions of them i would have sucked up to learning linux, like the aspire one can also come preloaded with linux because its just that slow... its definitely not fast enough for anything above vista basic or something because almost none of the atom notebooks have vista home installed

i'll try windowsblinds if only to make using the computer abit more pleasant, worried about how slow its gonna get tho, its already struggling enough as it is...

isnt vista basic the one that they sell to 3rd world countries, like i remember somewhere saying that the requirements are similar to windows xp so more people can run it? it sounds just like the situation me and my aspire on is in

Installing extra RAM is a pig on the Aspire one and involves pretty much dismantling the whole netbook.

I would imagine if its the preloaded XP the machine has come with 1 gig of RAM.

I have the Linux netbook and can recommend maybe getting Ubuntu installed on there instead, unless of course there are Windows specific applications you need to be using. Otherwise just use the free open source ones available for Ubuntu :D

I'd say, go for it. Vista can be faster than XP, and I've heard that it consumes less battery on netbooks.

If XP is already slow, Vista will barely crawl on that thing then.

Vista is a pig and a half!! Practically need a super computer just to run the basic version even.

So my P4 with 1GB of RAM running Vista Ultimate must be the mother of all supercomputers....

Vista Basic's hardware requirements are basically the same as Home Premium's. It depends how powerful your PC is.

Vista Basic is Home Premium without Aero, Media Center and a few other bits. I'd be more than happy to not have Aereo if I couldn't. I do like it though so use it. It's just a gimmick at the end of the day though.

Much like that 3D Alt-Tab. It's cool for about 5 minutes but is then completely useless.

<snip> I've heard that it consumes less battery on netbooks.

Definately not the case, I've tested it on a number of netbooks/laptops, and most use the same/more battery.

So my P4 with 1GB of RAM running Vista Ultimate must be the mother of all supercomputers....

You're lucky :p

Kill vista, install Linux : )

I love Linux, and support its install (or at least consideration as an alternative). If the OP is willing to consider it, he may find it suits him.

However, it could also about as welcome as a "Kill Ubuntu, install Vista" in a Linux thread. ;)

This maintenance-focused release includes bug fixes, updated translations, and a range of safe enhancements. This release fixes a Windows security issue that could allow arbitrary file deletion during privileged cleaning (reported by Zeze with TeamT5). It also adds new cleaners (including a DNS cache cleaner, Claude Code, and Visual Studio Code forks), support for multiple Chrome and Edge profiles, new deep scan options for developer directories like node_modules and venv, and safer, faster file shredding. All Platforms Added cleaners for Claude Code, DNS cache, and many Visual Studio Code forks. Added support for multiple Chrome and Edge profiles. Chrome can now clean downloaded AI models. Deep Scan can optionally remove venv, __pycache__, node_modules, and .angular directories. Deep Scan is faster by skipping directories on the keep list. File shredding is safer, faster, and leaves fewer recoverable traces. Improved handling of cookies, symlinks, Unicode filenames, external processes, and configuration files. Improved Expert Mode warnings and long warning dialogs. Fixed crashes related to cleaner detection, invalid Unicode, and malformed cleaner data. Clipboard is now cleared automatically after shredding files via paste operations. Linux Added AppImage support. Fixed startup crashes when Python Requests is unavailable. Windows Fixed a security vulnerability that could allow arbitrary file deletion when cleaning with elevated privileges. Added %WindowsSystem% variable support. Improved clipboard clearing using native Windows APIs. Improved installer experience on unsupported Windows versions. Reduced installer size and improved application robustness. Fixed Unicode handling, filename anonymization, Git revision reporting, and splash screen stability. • DriversCloud 12.1.6 by Razvan Serea With DriversCloud (formerly My-Config.com), you can explore your computer easily, safely and free. The application quickly scans your PC and identifies the hardware and software components. DriversCloud then establishes a list of the different drivers compatible with your OS and hardware. Download the drivers needed for the proper functioning of your computer. To detect your drivers, DriversCloud also displays a detailed summary of your hardware and software configuration, analyzes your BSOD, monitors in real-time your PC voltages and temperatures and lets you share your configuration online. Once the hardware components have been detected, you will be able to obtain with just a few clicks the latest drivers corresponding to the identified hardware. You can record your configuration on the site for free, and can get the corresponding URL to post the configuration to technical forums, e-mail and social networks. You can also download the detection result (the configuration) as a PDF file. To protect the user's privacy and data confidentiality, a 4-level confidentiality system was created that filters the XML marks and gives control to the user. The default level can be modified in the preferences. Using the maximum level will prevent the user from publishing his configuration and generating a corresponding PDF file. In non-connected mode, each XML configuration is stored on the server for one day (for practical reasons). However, you are given the opportunity to manually delete it. Created in 2004, and continually improved, My-Config.com has established itself on the web as a free service to PC users running Windows and Linux operating systems. The service is designed to work with the most common Internet browsers (Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari).
