Can't connect to NAS with Vista

if I type in \\NASSERVER in vista it will prompt me for my user name and password, then it tells me invalid user or pass. However, it works just fine on a XP machine. Is there something causing this vista box to not authenticate?

I believe it's due to some incaptibility with Samba based NAS devices. Apparently Vista uses NTLMv2 which Samba doesn't (or didn't) support.

You could try changing the settings in Vista to allow LM and NTLMv2, but I've still never got it to work.

Where are these settings? I'm also having mega problems accessing my NAS. A lot of the time if I go to \\NASSERVER explorer just crashes.

If you have Ultimate then you can user secpol.msc (I believe). If not then it's a registry edit (and even after that I've had no joy).

Can't remember exactly the edit required, but it's changing the lanmanager security level in the Current Control Set.

LJ50 - Thanks a lot, this had been driving me crazy!

I went in to secpol.msc (this also is available on Vista Business), and you need to go into:

Local Policies \ Security Options: Network Security: LAN Manager authentication Level

Change this from the default to "Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 if negotiated" which should allow greater security if required, but will still be backwards compatible with your NAS (This was to connect to a Buffalo Terrastation).

Good thread, So far so good with a new Vista 64 machine its working fine to my NAS box not sure what OS mine runs (Level 1 brand) what brand of NAS was the OP using ?

Didn't work for me, but I am running a VERY old Buffalo Linkstation, which I've just left as a drive for the laptops to backup to.

Yeah tried that. Same issue. Can browse to folder level, but no further. Accessing any folder with actual files in it gets me nowhere.

Confess I haven't spent a whole lot of time on it so can't say it's impossible.
