Overclock 9600GT

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just bought a new graphics card, a 9600GT. Specifically the Asus EN9600GT Black Pearl. As you can see it has come overclocked a bit already but I'd like to try to push it a bit further. At the moment the max temperature I've seen from it is 50C, which seems to be quite low. However I don't have any software that can really push it. I've outlined my main questions below.. hopfully someone here can help me out :)

- Is there any burn in type software for GPU's so I can make sure it is stable?

- What is the best tool to use for overclocking?

- I have tried to install Rivatuner but it doesn't seem to work on Vista x64. Are there any tools that will work with Vista x64?

- I would prefer not running any software in the background for overclocking so I would have to modify the BIOS using a tool such as NIBITOR. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it reasonably safe?

- How far (approximately) can the 9600GT go?

- What sort of temps for GPU's are safe? I believe they can go much higher than CPU temps?

Thanks!

Daniel

EDIT: Just saw the topic further down about Rivatuner and I now have it working! Still not sure about the other questions though.. :)

Apps to test GPU Stability : Fur Rendering, or use the demo's built into GPU Caps Viewer, 3DMark etc. etc.

Best OC Tool : Rivatuner, download it off Guru3D, and use the bundled driver to install in Vista x64, its works flawlessly ..

Oc'ing via Rivatuner means the clocks are applied while the OS is booted ... no services are required to run during normal OS usage to maintain the overclock ... bios edits are mainly done for mostly two purposes : editing voltages/timings or settings permanent clocks -> either not recommended if u'd have to rma's

Oc'ing limits are totally specific to each of the card's produced .. some can barely oc, and some can oc to insane clocks .. 9600GT in general are darn good oc'ers .. so keep testing ...

And regarding temps, <80c under load are easily safe ... so u have quite a headroom for oc i guess in terms of temps ..

I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO (768MB) it's OC'd to 641 core / 1866 memory.

Stock is 575 core / 1700 memory...not sure how similiar the cards are, or what the difference is between a GSO / GT. Me myself I am lazy and haven't even REALLY tested my stability yet for the GPU at these oc's, but it runs 3DMark06 fine, no artifacting, and i play Fallout 3 / World of Warcraft / Call of Duty 4 on max settings everday almost. Mostly wow though, cause I am addicted to raiding. =P

Nvidia has software that will add on to your drivers that will automatically test for the highest (stable) overclock, it will take a few hours and your computer will reset itself several times but if you really want to do it well it's your best option.

Is that stable without having any additional fans/coolers?

Don't overclock your graphics card, not worth it, will not give you a huge boost in benchmarks.

I hope that was a joke....

But's it's not huge, not when you have a 9600GT card which is mid level range.

Ok, when my GTX260 55nm version arrives from newegg in a few days, I will do a comparison from stock vs overclocked on it too.

And FYI...1k 3DMarks is huge, obviously you aren't into benching very much, or you would know this.

    • Sorry to be that guy but, Given Trump won again even after a failed first term it would appear attacking the other side is how to gain Government in America. Voters when it came down to it didn't give a s**t about those Democratic achievements and voted for Trump over an intelligent, qualified mixed race woman. We need to face up to this uncomfortable reality. There are more Americacan voters who support racism and christian bigotry along with defending and supporting pedophilia, adjudicated rapists, multiple time convicted felons etc than those who don't. Btw, that is how the world sees America now. Not that Trump voters care as they attempt to cocoon themselves in a white supremacy bubble.
    • That's not clickbait. Clickbait is headlines like, "You'll never guess what this person looks like now" for example. For goodness sake, take a look around the internet if you think this is clickbait. How do sites survive if people don't click through to articles? How many people in all honesty would have clicked this if it had your suggested headline? You and those upvoting your post won't be happy until the web is a couple of hundred websites all behind a paywall.
