capr
server 2008??? i am guessing you are against running windows products but you also don't want xbuntu so not really sure what to offer. debian is a solid linux distro with server packages. White Cuban
server 2008, are you mad?, maybe if this was a NAS, but for a frikkin webserv?, theres hundreds of distros, i know alot, i just dont know which to pick. it has freeBSD now, i don't like it really, but something similar with no GUI still can work, i just didn't like it for some reason. seemed bit messy and overkillish. rson451
Debian stable, CentOS/RedHat depending on your preferences for package management. Either should suit you fine. markwolfe Veteran Posted November 21, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 21, 2008 RedHat (and clones such as CentOS and WhiteBox) and Novell/SUSE seem to be popular and solid server choices. The clones offer the same enterprise-class software, just bereft of trademarked logos and names (references to "Red Hat" are removed and artwork/logos that are copywritten to Red Hat are replaced, for example). chconline Veteran Posted November 21, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 21, 2008 CentOS 5 is a very good choice. I use it for my webserver (Y) But Windows Server 2008 is also a very decent choice for webservers. I personally found Linux a lot easier to setup and use for some odd reason haha. It took me a LOAD of practice to get Windows right -- for Linux, you just gotta know your commands :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/699950-what-distro-for-a-hp-proliant-with-dual-xeon-30ghz/#findComment-590160746 Share on other sites

TrickFinlay2
I run Fedora 9 on my Thinkpad and CentOS 5 on my dual P3 server Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/699950-what-distro-for-a-hp-proliant-with-dual-xeon-30ghz/#findComment-590176816 Share on other sites
roadgeek9
Running Fedora 10 on my desktop, with a P3 550 and 192 MB RAM, works perfectly fine... CentOS is basically a free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which apparently should be okay. Xelar
I would take one of these seeing as they are supported by HP. Debian , Centos , Red Hat , SUSE or Ubuntu.
