Shift Linux 1.0 Alpha 3

Recommended Posts

Finally, a release we can work with (sort of). Shift Linux 1.0 Alpha 3 has working X, and several of the most popular Linux applications. Sorry I didn't write up a better announcement, but I think the release speaks for itself. This is the one you'll want to download. It's most feature-complete and a pretty solid base to work with.

Known bugs/problems:

- HUGE Size (will fix once Arch Linux 2009.02 will be released)

- Shift OpenOffice creates too many menu items (will be released as an update soon)

- I don't like the mouse pointer (is that a bug?)

So without further ado, here it is:

WHy do you insist on screenshots?

It's not even themed yet, since it's only a base for developers to work with, not actually for users.

I encourage you to, if you downloaded the ISO, if possible boot on real HW and check what works and what doesn't so we can begin working on that... also, any bugs reports will do. remember, this is WAY alpha.

Root password is "root". Username is "shift" and password is either "shift" or "linux". I forget. At a friends house as my Internet got cut off by a local fire, so sorry, I'll be off until the company fixes it :(.

Root password "root" doesn't work for me, for some reason. Either "shift" or "linux" doesn't work, too.

Here are some screenshots, for those asking. Hopefully the devs dont mind. Please ignore the fact it's in vmware. I haven't gotten it to a higher resolution yet so it's small for now but you get the idea.

I think I read somewhere that this one is installable, is it true? Also I noticed, the numpad keys don't work inside shift (maybe its something with running it in vmware, Im not sure).

If you guys want a Shifty default wallpaper (made) you can PM me, I'm perfectly fine with you guys using it without watermark or anything ^^ If you have any ideas in mind for a picture I'll try to go out on a good day and just shoot it :p

    • All it does is use the CPU more efficiently during boot to speed up boot times. That's it. Yawn....
    • It's not a one or the other kind of thing. Software should run efficiently, and the operating system should appropriately manage the CPU clocks. You could have the best most optimized software on earth, and it will still run faster if the CPU does a better job of boosting as needed. All this is doing is pre-boosting the CPU based on user actions, instead of waiting for the normal detection mechanism to kick in. If the OS knows it is about to need more CPU, why shouldn't it use that knowledge? It's the same idea of downshifting before passing someone, instead of just burying your foot into the peddle and waiting for the transmission to figure out what you want to do.

    • There really isn't anything magical about the low latency profile, other OS's do this as well. All they're doing is using your CPUs boost clock options in a more smarter way.
    • So we shouldn't have the option because of people using their laptops on battery? OK? LOL
