Penny Arcade vs. American Greetings

Recommended Posts

Before I continue, this is NOT a discussion of site issues or anything like that. This is a discussin of legalities, ethics, etc.

I'm also posting it here for those who don't frequent PA and Slashdot on a regular basis.

Penny Arcade was ordered by American Greetings to remove an image they had made.

Currently, this is what remains of it on the PA site:

There's a lovely discussion on it in the PA forums, also, SlashDot got wind and there's a discussion on it there:

http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/03/04/23/03362...7.shtml?tid=153

The image in question is here (remember, only Penny Arcade was asked to remove the image, mirrors were not, and Neowin is not mirroring the image in any way):

Personally, I'm laughing my ass off. This image will get seen a hell of a lot more now because of this. It will be even more circulated. And in many reader's minds, American Greetings is now just another assclown corporation.

If you wish you contact American Greetings about this, Penny Arcade has provided an email address:

[email protected]

I'm pretty sure that, due to the overwhelming attention this has gotten, that address will soon be flooded and closed/changed. I myself let them know what I think of their actions.

Discuss amongst yourselves... :woot:

Edit

A petition has been started. Click here for details.

Not sure what good it will do. Maybe show American Greetings that many think they're in the wrong. Show them that by doing what they did, they made things much much "worse" for themselves. Either way, you're supporting PA, so help the guys out. They bring teh funnay. :bounce:

i dont understand..how are the two connected?

Taken from here

A summery:

American Greetings owns the copyrights of Strawberry Shortcake, and many other 80's icons.

A lawyer fired off an email to our boys at PA, asking them to take down a recent comic (4/14/2003) that incorporated names and parodied images of Strawberry Shortcake.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • It does invite Linux because MS should have been improving their products all along these years instead chose to ignore the users now this year they’re making all of these improvements to their products where as Linux doesn’t have this kind of problems in fact it has gotten so good I can even play Windows games in Steam that I no longer ever needed Windows to carry on with my life, unlike you still use Windows and chose to try beat down down those who don't use Windows because they love their LG TV. (Surprisingly I actually own a 55” LED LG TV and it has been going strong for almost 14 years, longer than any Sony TV”)
    • As much as I love owning my own hardware, it's hard to argue with the value. I'm not a huge gamer, I'd actually be interested in a cheaper plan with limited monthly hours, or even a pay-by-the-hour plan.
    • Well, they (LibreOffice/The Document Foundation) are bitchy and whiny, yes, but they're right, at least this time. It doesn't make sense to market something as "free and open source to thwart dependency on foreign companies' software" but at the same time, using the formats of said companies (Microsoft) by default. That way, you are changing nothing, essentially, you're just using another UI. We all know that users just use the defaults and almost never change them. I'm not saying they should drop other formats altogether, but they shouldn't default to the thing they're trying to run away from in the first place. If you're gonna do something, just go all the way in, don't stop in the middle, IMO. Otherwise, shut up and move along.
