Internet Sharing

I have a Windows Xp desktop which is connected to the internet by a Ethernet cable.

I've got a USB wireless adapter for the desktop as well and I want to use my macbook so it connects wireless to my desktop so I can use the internet at the same time.

I can use my macbook to set up a wireless router type thing with the ethernet connected, so my desktop can connect wireless, but I want to set up my desktop to be the host.

Is this possible, if so how?

Yes, you need to enable the 'Internet connection sharing' feature: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

The above will work but a router would be a much better solution.

^ exactly you have a desktop, a macbook and I would assume high speed internet but you can not afford a $30 wireless router to make your life easier?

my apartment only allows one connection, but with a router will it allow more than one connected device?

Yes a wireless router does NAT, it takes the 1 IP they give you and then allows that to be used by multiple devices all at the same time -- exactly how ICS or the macbook internet sharing works.
