Taskbar freezes & unfreezes randomly

Hey everyone,

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, with Aero turned off.

Taskbar items keep freezing randomly, but still allows me to click on the items. Meaning, even thought I have an IE window open, along with 2 AIM conversations, the IE window is not listed on the taskbar, and the 2 conversations are highlighted as if new messages have been received (even though they have been read).

After giving it a few minutes, it unfreezes, and updates to reflect the current state of all open windows.

The rest of the OS is flying just fine. Any suggestions on what's going on with my taskbar? Thank you!

I am experiencing the same random task bar freezes.

Does anybody have a solution?

My sister was having a problem with the taskbar hanging on her Toshiba laptop (both on Vista and later on Win7). It appeared this was caused by her sound driver (a really old Realtek HD Audio driver). WU wasn't finding a new one for this particular machine, but Toshiba.com had one.

Another thing to look into would be shell add-ins (toolbars, things that add context menu entries like WinRAR / WinZip) or apps known to be buggy like Skype (make sure you're at least on the very latest version).
