35 posts in and i forgot to say hi

hello, my name is Wolf. im a 19 year old dude and i am very knowledgeable in (older) computer stuff. i started posting here at neowin for a number of reasons that all seemed to happen at once. i won't really go into detail on that though.

the last time i regularly posted at a forum even close to this size, was computing.net back in 2003/4. that was a very very long time ago and i am not used to having a separate forum for every little thing. so i may post in the wrong forum or not realize what i am replying to (sorry!) and i shall try to get better.

i do feel overwhelmed with the size, its hard to find what i posted last night but oh well i guess thats what comes with such a large community.

i originally was going to be in the field of computers and technology, but just as i graduated HS i realized that computer stuff is only interesting as a hobby, and that i would be bored out of my mind as an IT pro. so i am planning to be a driver of some kind. get a CDL class B maybe, yeh thats the plan, drive a local route till im old enough (21) to get a Class A and drive the big rigs. well actually that was the plan when i was little too, but the dot-com bubble had burst right about the time my school got internet, and i slowly became a geek. to the point where some people didn't like me, because all i talked was computer speak. kinda like a WoW addict telling a farmer what he does at night. that has changed quite a bit, and i am more likely to talk about other stuff in a given conversation than i am tech speak

i love to help people with stuff i know alot about, for free, because it gives me that warm feeling inside that we (should) all know about.

my posts are usually essay-lengh and i don't really know if anybody does or will bother to read them :( but usually when i post i have something useful to say. i try not to troll because the "other guy" with 1000's of posts usually wins (on any website, not just Neowin)

i don't use spell check, so occaisonally i spell a word wrong, like the one in bold i know i spelled it wrong. but i am usually pretty good

my interests, unlike most people who are technically inclined, for the most part lie outside in hands-on stuff. my father drags home junk cars and i go to work salvaging any valuable parts, like the aluminum intake on most front-wheel drive cars, or side view mirrors for minivans and SUVs which seem to be in demand on eBay. basically anything i can make money off of. its fun carelessly tearing apart stuff and getting rough with it. hard work, but it sure beats sitting on the computer all day trying to get good at games (i suck at video games btw)

i own two laptops, both IBM ThinkPads, neither with a glide-pad. one i leave in my van or take with me out in the back yard to play MP3s while i work, and the other i take in the car on long trips so i can draw stuff up in CAD or better my Photoshop skills, or better yet, write another part of a long story i have been working on, that basically explains my life and feelings from the 3rd person

i do sometimes spend hours on my desktop inside, when there is something worth doing, like moderating my home forum that kinda recently dropped in active member count :( or reading Neowin haha. but this stresses my paws more than anything else, and it is affecting my ability to use hand tools. i think i might have carpel-tunnel or at least the beginning stages of it. i am afraid this might eventually keep me from driving 18 speed trucks, or even driving automatic school buses (my two dream professions, kinda weird eh?)

i also stop in at the local computer shop in town and do some disassembly for them, basically stripping junk desktops and "disposable" laptops, putting the good parts aside, taking the metal cases with me (cash them in when steel goes up at the scrap yard) and throwing the rest in the garbage. alot of the leftovers get put up on eBay and i make 25% of everything i touch

i hope somebody reads this post in it's entirety. even if you don't though, please don't point it out as that would probably hurt my feelings quite a bit

the end!

Welcome! (I did read your whole post)

I hope you find Neowin to be a good community and helpful contributions are appreciated as it sets this large, diverse community apart from others.

Are you planning to go to college? I think you would find it very helpful to continue your passion and turn it into a career that can bring you a brighter future financially. The IT market is VERY competitive and you would want to try to have an advantage by getting a college degree as a base.

Good luck to your future endeavors.

Also note that grammar and spelling is appreciated. :p

thats what everyone tells me, especially the tech lady at my old school. i for some reason just can't stand professionalism though. tight dress clothes, day planners, that junk desktop box that keeps coming back? the boss, the co-workers, etc i am not really sure i can do that. i have always been more "rough" as in i have never dressed up nice for anything. hoodies and jeans are most of what i wear, and what i do for money, even in the tech world, is mostly paws on destruction

i have considered getting a job at some local place... the computer shop being one of them. i do know better than to attempt to land a job at BBY Geek Squad however. i really don't think they would hire me anyway, i can come up with tech talk on the fly that would probably land my ass a spot on the parking lot.

i am still considering college though. maybe my love for the driver's seat will help me make money to pay for such a feat (yeh, thats what i consider it)

Good luck to your future endeavors

thanks!

that Apple-hate thread kinda turns me off... other than that i do like Neowin very much

i have got spellcheck in my browser (Opera 10) but i refuse to let myself use it. rather, when a word gets red-lined i attempt to correct myself. if i can't get it after a couple tries, i say screw it and move on. it improves my spelling if i post enough

well, g'bai

College provides you with priceless resources (if you go to a good school) and it shouldn't cost that much at all (a few thousand if you go to a state school). You shouldn't deny yourself the opportunity just because of the attire of people. People who work at Google are allowed to work in hoodies and jeans too.

Think about it seriously. Even if you don't like to be in the career, a college degree will at least show the knowledge and potential you have as a person.

Enjoy.

never looked at it quite that way

maybe i am not aiming high enough? Google? sounds very cool! for some reason i always had this thought that "IT Pro" and "college degree" meant boring stuff like what i "learned" in a certain "A+ Computer" course that i slept through and passed with the highest mark.

you know what? i think i will actively look into this. people tell me i have the potential but i never believed them. thanks!

Not being funny, but your username is VERY long. Kind of annoying on the live feeds!

Oh, but welcome also :p

i am trying to think of a shorter name yep. it annoys me too! i hate made up usernames though. and trying to come up with something unique that works across many websites is very hard.

i will have it changed by Monday. i promise!

Hi Wolf. Welcome to Neowin. Don't get ticked off on this but I need to let you know. Capitalize your "I" and every first letter in the beginning of a sentence. As for the subject "I", no matter where it is located in the sentence, "I" is always capitalized. Other than that, you're a very good writer.

There you go. Be confident in yourself. College means a lot of things but one thing you will always realize is that it provides you the opportunity to realize your potential or set up for a career that will test your skills while enjoying yourself.

Power to you.

I know how to properly capitalize. English class in high school for the most part was a breeze. My teachers liked my work and i never failed to properly capitalize anything.

i don't mind yer comment on this - i fully expected somebody to bring this up

(yes, i spell it "yer")

the lack of capitals is intentional however. it makes it easier to type during long posts, and just in general. you see, it gets painful after a short while and using my left pinky to reach for the shift bar every new sentence just aggravates that. i can go for much longer without proper caps than i can with. i am making every attempt to at least keep it consistent. no capitals at the beginning of a sentence, capitals for all proper nouns with the exception of "i" which gets used way too often, proper punctuation on words like "don't" and "isn't" as well as commas where needed, and periods at the end of every sentence. though sometimes i forget them at the end of paragraphs.

i hope this doesn't make me look like too much of a moron or newb, or whatever people think of somebody who doesn't use capitals. it is the way i do things and i will not change any time soon.

We're not going to like that one bit. Writing proper English shows one's intelligence and that's the fact of life. If you do want to be taken seriously by others, you should consider proper spelling and grammar.

Laziness is inexcusable :p

    • AirPods Pro 3 are now available for only $179 by Taras Buria Apple's third-gen AirPods Pro 3 introduced a few important upgrades over the previous generation while retaining the old $249 price. Still, that is quite a lot of money for a pair of earbuds, but the good news is that right now, you can save quite a lot of money on them, thanks to a new all-time low price. AirPods Pro 3 retain their classic look and form factor, with changes focused on the inside. These earbuds now come with five sets of foam-silicone tips, which sit much more securely in your ear, making the earbuds a perfect choice for physical activities and workouts. Additionally, new tips provide better passive noise cancellation. Speaking of noise cancellation, ANC is now much better at blocking outside noise, with Apple claiming the AirPods Pro mute up to two times more sound than the AirPods Pro 2. The AirPods Pro 3 also have heart rate sensors for activity tracking during workouts. They also support Live Translation and Hearing Aid mode. As for battery life, you get up to 8 hours on a single charge, with the case adding 20 more. The case supports wireless (Qi or Apple Watch charger) and wired charging over USB Type-C (cable not included). • Everything I have read is that the BBC is still Pro Doctor Who but wants a solid plan before they let anyone else try to do it. Which is fair.
    • I totally agree no one should trust governments AND big tech companies that have near monopolies in certain market segments. The difference is of course citizens at least have some say in government. Yes, requiring Apple to open up Sirsi to other AI backends is in the interest of EU customers and certainly "opens" up the platform a crack. What are you saying? I wish the US would regulate tech companies more here and even break them up in some cases. Granted trusting the government to do it right is a crap shot at best but what is the alternative? To allow a few tech companies to continue to run everything and just print money? It's crazy to me for example that in most of the world 99% of communications go thru Facebook servers via WhatsApp. What kind of dystopian world are we living in?
    • You can.. make sure you have ADB tools on whatever OS you are running, plug your phone into your PC give it approval to talk to the phone then run this command. adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.chrome So long as you leave Android Webview untouched it wont break anything on your Phone to do this. I have been using exclusively Firefox mobile since it was released.
