did the recovery CD say "Windows XP" on it?

i was setting up some Dell machines a couple months ago that each shipped with a Vista Business disc, an XP disc, and various driver and application discs.

look closer at what you got for CDs.

telling us what brand/model computer you have may also help, as there might be an F-key to press for an automated recovery mechanism of some sort.

Is there a recovery partition on the hard drive that might have Vista? If not, the only thing you can do is contact the manufacturer and explain that the machine came with Vista installed but only recovery disks for XP. It might just be a mix-up.

There is no way to get back what you previously had installed, because the recovery media actually completely deletes everything that is installed and replaces it with a new installation.

Sorry what is a Recovery Partition?

Open the manual and look for a section that describes it. That's about it. Sometimes there might be a line printed when it starts up that says "hit XXX to do YYY" along with all the other BIOS info, but it's not always there.

Well, you can also open up disk management by right-clicking on My Computer in XP and picking Manage. If you go down to Storage and Disk Management, it will show all the partitions on the hard drive. That would at least tell you if it exists.

From the acer site

In general........

OBR software ships on the latest generation of Veriton desktops.

eRecovery software ships on the latest generation of Power and Aspire desktops.

System that ship with OBR 3.0 offer

1) a recessed button that will automatically run eRecovery when pressed

2) eManager application on the desktop that contains

a) eSettings (view system settings)

b) eSecurity (including eLock)

c) eRecovery

ow to recovery your system from bootup

1. Locate the Alt key, to the left of the space bar, and F10, on the top row of keys.

2. Power the system on.

3. When the system is powered on, tap the Alt and F10 keys together at the same time when the Acer splash screen appears.

It should state "Please wait a moment..." with the Acer logo in the upper left hand corner.

4. At the eRecovery Management menu it will ask you how to restore.

5. Click on the restore option you would like to use.

This is from the Acer FAQ.. You would have to look up the specifics for your model!! Its quite possible you removed your recovery partition? But if the thing came with Vista -- you should be able to put vista back.. I would suggest you call ACER to either send you media, or help you with the recovery process.
