Ford nixes sale of two cars

Contrary to the recent stream of new-car announcements, Ford has confirmed that two vehicles speculated for North America will not be heading our way.

The Detroit-based automaker said it will not sell the Ford Ka city car or the global Ford Ranger pickup (developed in Australia for worldwide markets) in Canada or the U.S.

Currently on sale in foreign markets, the Ka is smaller than the Ford Fiesta that will go on sale in Canada next year.

"Our view is that Fiesta is about the smallest vehicle that we think will be a real success in the United States," Ford CEO Allan Mulally told Automotive News.

gas is cheap? where?

petrol is cheap in the US and Canada compared to the whole of Europe at least - if you think otherwise maybe check the price of fuel globally.

UK currently pay more than $7 USD per US Gallon.

Whats the price in the US atm.... between 2 or 3 US dollars or something? and Canada between 3 and 4 I believe.

What's hilarious is most Europeans can probably drive 1 mile for less money even with the above prices. I get over 50mpg :)

Don't even start. There is much much more to it than just saying that it costs more over there.

Hopefully a mod deletes your post before a war breaks out over that comment.

Of course there is more to it than just pure price... If US citizens were in a third world country earning pittance then yes you may have a point, but the truth is that the US is very similarly aligned financially with a lot of Western Europe ... and so fuel should be price similarly, but its in fact much cheaper.

I'm intrigued what reasons could possibly make you think its expensive (apart from the fact in recent years its increased in price quicker than inflations) but as part of GDP... the US have fuel cheap in comparison to a lot of the world.

Stupid move about not bringing the new Ranger to North America. After all, not every truck buyer is going to want something as big as an F-150.

As for the Ka, I can see it selling decently in Canada (but not as well as the upcoming Fiesta and Focus), but definitely not in the United States.

It is. The Ranger was the best selling small pickup for years (but I think currently the Tacoma is) and the Ranger has a huge following.

How can it be global if it's not being released in arguable one of the biggest markets for that particular type of vehicle? makes no sense to me. I don't see it as a big loss though, from what I've heard the new Ranger is a pile of rubbish so your not missing out! as for the Ka, didn't even know they still made that deathtrap! there you go, learn something new each day...

Sounds like stupid GM. Like seriously, the Big 3 are run by retards. Pontiac, the most successful brand of GM (After Chevrolet) was cancelled. Saturn, selling GM's smallest cars was cancelled. The most profitable brands of GM were cancelled and the worst ones were kept. Like seriously, where do they think this market is for Buick and Cadillac? Though the North American market is a bit strange. One of Europes best selling and affordable cars (Opel Astra, Vauxhall Astra, Saturn Astra - I have one) didn't sell at all in North America. Sometimes I think North Americans a dumb as bricks. They complain about expensive gas and low gas mileage, but they buy the most fuel hungry SUV's. My neighbour owns a Hummer and she drives to work every day, a whole 1.2 km.

As long as they deliver the Ford Fiesta, I'm happy. That's the car that we all want (me and all the others angry @ the fact that Euros get good quality and practical Fords and not us).

Mazda confirmed that the Mazda2 will be making its way here, so the small cars market is surely growing.

I'd be surprised if Ranger sales aren't strong enough to keep them going, Almost all of the commercial service trucks (repair, pools, A/C, eletrical, etc) use Rangers and they're pretty rare to see sitting around on car lots, as opposed to Expeditions and Excursions which are piled up on lots everywhere.

We never get any global cars, but I dobut they'd kill off the ranger line. We'll probably just get an american version, just like we get an american version of the focus.

Too bad really, considering the global ones typically get better mileage.

That would make sense, since the global Ranger model is more of a 4-door family/recreation vehicle, and the big market for them in the US is as commercial vehicles.

in california, the gas is between $3-$4.

Personally, I think the Ford Ka makes a lot of sense. It's perfect for the still drivable single senior, singles just want a city car, families with more than one driver and need one for the stay at home to shop etc. Probably why it's doing well in Europe and could do well in Canada. Being a Canuck I'm all for it, and I wish we could get some Ford England stuff, what they did with some of them lil cars like the escort was way cool (guilty of watching to many Brit cop shows but I'm an ex-pat so sue me).

I have a 2006 ford ranger 5 speed standard 3.0 liter and it is not a gas pig.

Hope they do not kill the line as i was thinking of upgrading.

I like the extra cab for storing my stuff.

I only commute about 10 to 15ks.
