The Power of Word 2010

Question

Hi guys,

I downloaded Word 2010 this morning and so far it's great; a lot quicker and more stable than the Technical Preview. How about your experiences?

I just wanted to share the below example with you. This Word document was made from a blank document in 20 minutes using just Word 2010 for all the image editing (background removal, hand drawn effect, reflection, glow etc.). There's some OpenType and other features used too.

I know it's far from perfect, but being able to get professional results using only Word is really great.

With Word and PowerPoint even, you are able to create presentations far beyond professional. It seems more futuristic than professional by what I mean. I would love to see a similar design on the drive-thru starbucks we have in some parts of California.

That's true! Now PowerPoint 2010 uses DirectX, the animations and transitions are really slick. It's a shame a lot of people and businesses are still using older versions of Office (my company still has Office XP installed on some fairly powerful systems @@).

DirectX use is good for some older machines with decent graphics cards too if it uses DX9 because my old machine lags on animations so I need to use the laptop. My 7600GT feels like a very big wimp :(

Office 2010 is awesome. Started using the first Technical Preview and am using the beta now. The speed as mentioned is great on 64 bit systems and I love how everything seems way more efficient (auto-hide ribbon functionality, being able to collapse non-essential areas, etc..) I love it :)

Thanks Anaron (and sorry about posting in the wrong forum; I'm still new :blushing: )

As for the beta, so far it's a lot more stable that the technical preview, and I believe it's free until next October.

You're welcome. That's alright, you know better now. ;)

Next October? I figured Office 2010 would be out by next summer. According to Wikipedia, the purported release date is Spring 2010.

I agree, guys, beta software always gets me hooked, then it's hard to go back :( In the case of Office, I use it every day for work and play, so it's a big part of my computer use.

Compared with the big changes in Office 2007, 2010 feels like a nice revision and polishing, just as Windows 7 feels compared with Vista. Things like being able to customize the ribbon, a smoother workflow with more professional results, advanced image tools (like searchable OCR for images!) are all nice improvements.

As for the release date, Microsoft says the first half of 2010 in their FAQ, so I guess they'll be an RC early next year then RTM in Spring, but that's just a guess. I suppose the October expiry is just like Windows 7 RTM's long expiry period; to give people plenty of time to play without feeling rushed.

About the example, the original is on flickr (either that or you're saying it's not a good example, haha, which is okay since it was done so quickly).

P.S. Just for your reference, the official FAQ (regarding the expiry and everything else) is at: http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/fa...aspx#5zzf104020

I did this in Word 2007 too.

I don't have the same fonts etc... and I dunno how to change the shadow color (is it even possible?)

Hi EddiePwnsYou,

The title font in mine is Gabriola, which ships with Windows 7, if you have that. However, to get all the swirls, it needs OpenType support, which only comes with Office 2010.

As for the shadow color, just right-click on the object, choose 'Format Shape' and there should be a 'Shadow' option (I think this was the case in Word 2007, anyway). In there you can change the shadow color, depth, angle etc. You can also edit the 3D settings from the same dialog box).

I hope this helps :)

@Just Jonty: Could you upload *.docx file?

Sure, please find the file attached (just rename it *.docx).

Please note I have no rights to the Starbucks logo, it's being used only for educational purposes, so don't do anything with it you shouldn't ^^

Also, because of the time limit, some of the techniques used here are 'quick and dirty'. Anyway, have a look and you're welcome to ask any questions if anything's unclear.

    • Sorry to be that guy but, Given Trump won again even after a failed first term it would appear attacking the other side is how to gain Government in America. Voters when it came down to it didn't give a s**t about those Democratic achievements and voted for Trump over an intelligent, qualified mixed race woman. We need to face up to this uncomfortable reality. There are more Americacan voters who support racism and christian bigotry along with defending and supporting pedophilia, adjudicated rapists, multiple time convicted felons etc than those who don't. Btw, that is how the world sees America now. Not that Trump voters care as they attempt to cocoon themselves in a **** bubble.
    • That's not clickbait. Clickbait is headlines like, "You'll never guess what this person looks like now" for example. For goodness sake, take a look around the internet if you think this is clickbait. How do sites survive if people don't click through to articles? How many people in all honesty would have clicked this if it had your suggested headline? You and those upvoting your post won't be happy until the web is a couple of hundred websites all behind a paywall.

    • Or use Epic games and get full games for free. lol Steam and their demos. Thankfully there’s competition
    • Maybe I missed it, but does this say anywhere that the game save bug has been squashed? I haven't encountered it myself, but it would be nice to know I'm good to go. Anyway, amazingly well done game. Mostly more of the same. ...but when the same is best in class with improved graphics and features, then a win.
