Can I replace the mainboard to put more RAM in than the current max of 2GB? It would also then be prudent to replace the processor. The case is of a high quality, which is why I think it's worth salvaging.

Is it a nightmare to replace the :)therboard on such an "OEM machine"?

Thanks for any help in advance, as ever. :)

you dont have to take pics, just tell us the model of you motherboard - it should be printer right on the motherboard in the biggest letters there (usually near the ram or cpu)

cheers

OEM boards don't generally denote their form factor on them. Even my ASUS P5Q Premium doesn't say so on its PCB even though it is an Extended ATX board.

Model of motherboard found:

PTGD-VX (as you'd expect, it's a Sony OEM board)

I'll post pics in two minutes of the look of the case (i.e. where the power supply is located etc) as I think the layout will prove to make things difficult, as it wasn't designed to be mucked around with.

Thanks for help so far :)

Looks like a regular micro-ATX board to me. Is the faceplate over the ports on the back removable? If so, motherboards include one that just snaps on. The pinout of any buttons and LEDs on the machine might be more difficult though, and you might have to trace where all the wires go and add new connectors to them. The PSU could also be an issue if it's old and don't have the outputs needed by modern motherboards.

it would be pretty hard to explain how to replace a motherboard on that kind of case, since it is so rarely used... and that is the weirdest location to put in a power supply that i have ever seen! o_O

also, im pretty sure you can still replace the motherboard, you just have to be careful with the form factor

I too was hoping it was a faceplate but its the PSU (see other pic).

Yes. I mean to the left of the PSU where all the ports are. If you look at the bottom of that, it looks like it might be removable. I don't see how the PSU is an issue other than it maybe being too tight a fit for a large cooler.

I have the Sony RA 820G. If your system is like mine then it is liquid cooled. The way the cooling element sits over the cpu even after you have removed the spring mounted screws it restricts you from lifting the motherboard straight up and out of the case. The case seems to have been riveted around the internals once installed.

I obtained a perfectly matching replacement case from another RA series model with a good psu and a bad board and I was hoping to swap my good board out of my rusted (aka Hawaiian gold encrusted) case with a bad psu into the nice cleaner case. Once the board is unscrewed you just can't get it out of the case. I came to this forum hoping to find a clue as to what rivets to selectively drill out to effect a board swap.

Aloha

as can see at the above picture from the back that the actual motherboard and cooler all slide out as one! please i might take some time putting pictures up as iam going to update ram ,motherboard etc ......

    • Not even an OLED display on the laptops. Also it seems that the laptop design isn't the same as the Surface Ultra model. Looks like bargain bin at high prices.
    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
    • Interesting read. I knew the adware was quite controversial at the time, however never realised to the point The Guardian wrote an article about Patchou. I just said no and enjoyed his creation, I’d probably be a lot more wary of something like that today though.
