Problem with video conversion

Recommended Posts

I'll try to explain this as best as I can.

I've got the new Mock the Week DVD, and I ripped it onto my computer. All the .vob files play fine, and according to the properties, the resolution of each file is 720x576. I'm finding it very hard to believe now though, because no matter what video conversion software I use, it always comes out in 4:3 resolution, and it still says it's 720x576.

I've just tried converting the video using Any Video Converter at 720x480 resolution, and it still came out at the same 4:3 resolution, which is really weird, so I'm trying it at 768x576 in SUPER.

Does anyone know a way to fix this? As I've got another DVD I want to rip, and if I can't even do this one properly, there's not much point. :(

What is the problem? 720x576 is standard PAL resolution (720x480 is NTSC). Neither are a true 4:3, but close enough.

When I play the .vob file in WMP, it looks right. It's 16:9 widescreen and it looks great. When I convert it though with the same resolution, it turns into a 4:3 video.

WMP will(?) adjust the picture as necessary depending on what ratio it feels is the most appropriate (1.33:1, 1.75:1 ect) and crop the rest, just as most tvs do. If you are converting a widescreen video and are keeping the dvd resolution, there needs to be padding. This will usually be set with a "keep aspect ratio" option on the converter. This is needed to avoid tall picture syndrom where the entire picture is squashed horizontally, or worse, cropping of the extreme left and right of the picture. Take a 720x576 and crop the black, if you then convert it to the standard resolution but keep the aspect, the padding will be added again in order to keep the correct video ratio (which does not include the padding).

Hi Everyone

New to Any Video Converter (avc) and am using the free version, and planning to buy the registered version if this will convert a widescreen video to a full screen?? I get the formatting but i fail to see the option of "Letter Box, Pan Screen, Full Screen" or 16:9 to 4:3 ratio settings like are found in xilisoft version of this software (which is to slow for my liking). If i could get a Step by Step I would appreciate it.

TKS for reading

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
