using the word "as"

it's been a few years since i stepped foot into a classroom...

so my friend is taking an english course and wants to know something about using the word as to compare

are these the same? (same rule)

the melon was as small as an orange

my eyes are the same color as hers

if they're not using the same rule, what is it? i just can't remember >.<

Both are adverbs.

'as' as an adverb is used when comparing someone or something.

It's also used as a preposition when describing the purpose of someone or something, for example "I work as a computer geek".

It's also used as several conjuntions....

1.Because, example,,,"As I'm going to the pub, I'll buy you a drink."

2.Like, example..."As with many people, I want to win the lottery."

3.While, example..."I saw Gordon Brown as I was walking past Downing Street."

4.Although, example..."Angry as I am with you, I still love you."
