WLM & Shutdown Problem

I'm asking for a friend so bear with me. I've never heard of anything like this but basically, when she goes on WLM (appearing online) she cannot turn her computer off the way she usually would (Start -> Shutdown Computer) and obviously that would be quite annoying if you kept having to pull the plug on the power. But if she goes on WLM and appears offline and speaks to people, it will shut down fine. The weird thing is, if she does not open WLM at all, and say for example, goes on Facebook and opens iTunes, she can turn it off fine, which makes me think its something to do with WLM. She has re-installed WLM countless times to no avail.

If it helps she is running XP and the latest version of WLM.

Try to reinstall WLM.

What exactly does happen when she tries to shutdown with WLM open? Does that box with the shutdown options (Shut down, restart, etc.) pop up? Or does nothing happen at all?

Can it shut down if she went on WLM, then exited the program and tried to shut down?
