Optus Wireless Broadband

I am currently using a USB Modem (E160E) supplied by Optus Australia for my Broadband. I very nearly bought a Netgear MBR624GU Wireless Router to create a small home Wireless Network. The retailer assured me that my modem would work with this router. My last call was to Optus , their answer is definately NO. They say I will have to purchase a new Modem(Inzone) and upgrade my plan . I think this is a little mean. Apart from creating a Home network, I also wanted to be able to locate the router in my house where the signal is the strongest.

Has anyone a way around this without me having to shell out for a new modem and an upgraded plan?

If I bought a E220 Modem would this solve my problem?

What type of internet connection is it? DSL/Cable...Other (please specify)?
