Well... I thought I should post the solution I found, since somebody might find this useful.

I am using the foo_dop component for Foobar2000, and it works like a charm; the only annoying thing is that you actually have to install iTunes, which is really unfortunate but there's obviously no way to get around that it seems... at least I don't need to launch it and disabled the gazillions processes it launches at boot time. It even puts coverflow covers if you have external cover jpg in your mp3 folder, pretty complete if you ask me.

All right, hope this will help anybody else who's just disgusted at iTunes like I am.

Hehehe, would you believe it? I think my whole day has been one major Deja Vu. Ok a couple threads up or down from here there is another labelled "What do you think?" This thread is a about a guy who is revamping a program called GT-iMedia (and needed some fresh ideas which is how I got involved). The program is free and despite looking a little too much like iTunes to make you comfortable buddy, it is worth a look and GygaSoft has on their site the latest avaliable version is 3.4.something or rather around that. It does all the things iTunes does (well all the good things you want) and serves as a COMPLETE replacement. If you can get a friend to use it aswell, from what I'm guessing, it also bypasses the annoying sync requirement which otherwise erases your iPod/Phone/Touch, and allows you to just drag and drop, meaning you can get al those songs from your friend w/o shunting them back home on a USB stick.

It's worth a look.

Peace out man.

Floola supports almost all features offered by iPods including photos, artwork, podcasts and smart playlists!

It automatically converts any incompatible audio or video file so that you can copy almost any file to it. It allows adding youtube and myspace videos with a single click. Now it even makes it possible to keep your Google calendars synched!

Take a look at the feature list to find out what it can do and feel free to suggest anything that might be missing.

Mediamonkey is definitely the best music manager and it supports my iPhone 3GS.

However, it's not free. It's $30 for a 3.x license and $40 for a lifetime license. If you want freeware, then Winamp is the best alternative. It even features file monitoring and is not a resource hog like iTunes.
