I don't have an anti virus on my public facing web server, and I never had an issue.

However, I must add that I run my web services in a virtual Ubuntu machine on top of Server 2008 - just as an extra layer of security.

I don't honestly think that would add *that* much security tbh.

But Yeah, OP, you don't need antivirus.

I'm one of "others" that like anti-virus on any servers that are web facing or are on a network that has "access" to the outside world.

Some reasons why:

* 0 Day Exploits

* User Uploads

* Infections within the network/datacenter/etc

* Extra Protection

As well as the fact that if a virus gets onto your system, it may not do direct damage to it attack/affect the end users systems.

"please give me the disadvantages if i kept server any of Antivirus less... "

* Viruses....

* Malware

* Trojans

* many other things

I totally agree with you, but a basic webserver really does not need antivirus. Pretty much, what's the harm in actually just having one on there?

Actually i faced some problem with the antivirus software's because last time i installed symantec endpoint but machine goes slower, an that i don't want it. so can you advice me how to get both *AV also installed as well as machine also *faster processing... ?

Turn down the pro active scan and let it run scans once a week or something

Although you dont NEED one, as a personal prefference, i would install one. Just makes sense to make yourself as safe as possible. If you didnt have it and did somehow become infected, you would be kicking yourself. Whereas if the worst happens and you had antivirus installed, at least you can say you had covered everything possible.

Well, running a virtual OS does create a sort of sandboxed server that isolates the server functions from the host OS that is installed on the computer. It als can be quickly deleted and replaced in the event of catastrophe.

I would probably actually choose the *nix foundation and running the Windows servers (like for Exchange or other Microsoft-specific technologies) on top of that. ;)

If using Windows yes, If using Linux/Unix No.

For email servers, running AV on Linux would be a smart idea, so you scan for infected emails. Perhaps for this thread starter, too, if he is using this for FTP, as he mentioned. Scan for infected uploads. But for pure web serving, I don't see where it would be necessary.

But it doesn't hurt to have the AV installed, either, if there is a slight risk of infection or uploaded payloads.

I just dont see the real advantages to not have at least something simple on there to be safe. Choose a lightwieght solution if you must but something is always better than nothing. You'll kick yourself later if something were to happen and then your rebuilding a server from scratch... :unsure:

Required ? No, it's not required on any computer..

*Should* you, Yes. You want something lightweight, aka not Norton, McAfee, AVG has taken a turn downhill, so I'd look at the other free options.. Donno if MSE will work on a server but it's lightweight and works well.

Ideally, anything uploaded to the server, at least from any web front end, should be scanned right away. Not only for the servers security, but also anyone who might download that file. With regular scans of the computer as a whole. Ports you don't need the server to use should be blocked at both the server level, and router level, to limit it's access to outside sources.

    • Apple CEO Tim Cook confirms looming price hikes due to memory shortages by Hamid Ganji Image via Apple Memory and chip shortages have led to significant price increases for electronics over the past year, and it seems that more hikes are on the way for upcoming smartphones and computers. Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company is planning to increase the prices of some of its products due to the ongoing memory and storage shortages. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook confirmed the looming price hikes for Apple’s future products, adding that “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable.” He also said the company is doing its best to “mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.” The Apple CEO also noted that the allocation of a large portion of memory chips to AI companies has contributed to shortages in the market, resulting in lower supply at a time when demand for devices remains high. “We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products. That’s the bottom line,” Cook said. Cook also added that Apple is ready to use its vast cash reserves to help boost supply in the market because additional production capacity is needed. While he declined to specify how Apple plans to do that, he said the company will not build its own memory and storage factories despite its financial resources and silicon expertise. Cook did not provide further details on the scale of the price increases or which Apple products would be affected, though iPads and Macs could see higher prices sooner than other products. Apple’s next product launch event is scheduled for September, when the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone. It remains unclear whether the upcoming iPhones will be affected by the price increases, but given the current memory shortage, higher prices seem increasingly likely. There is currently no clear timeline for the end of the memory shortage. Samsung, one of the world’s three largest memory chip manufacturers, recently said the shortage could persist for several more years.

    • +1000 to this, don't understand why they added that margin around the top bar, even the close button is a PITA to click without aiming. Ofc, this is just preview and hopefully they will revert such odd UX decision before hitting final version.
