The rumours would appear to be true. Borderlands dev Gearbox IS working on Duke Nukem Forever - and the reborn game is set to be unveiled at Seattle event PAX today.

US dev sources have indicated to CVG that the game will get a "grand demo" at the show - and will be built upon what 3D Realms has already created, rather than a completely fresh project. We're hopeful it will be playable.

Shocked? Of course you're not. It's hardly as if this is the best kept secret in games.

Publisher 2K last night said that "something big is going to happen at the 2K Games Booth this PAX".

The tease follows last month's rumours that Gearbox had taken over development of DNF. Boss Randy Pitchford reportedly intimated that something may be coming at PAX.

2K's PAX conference will be available via live stream at 6pm UK time through the link below.

Duke Nukem Forever has suffered a famously patchy history. Original developer 3D Realms shut down last year, after working on the game. for over a decade

Check out the latest gameplay video to emerge below. Bear in mind it's unofficial footage - allegedly taken from an ex-3D Realms employee's online portfolio.

Looks a bit ancient. We're very keen to see what Gearbox has done with the old girl.

It's time to kick ass and chew gum, but I'm all out of development time and investors. So that's that.

... Right. I wanted to get that one out before I realised it was lame.

I shall now exit thread.

I like the.. "It's time to kick ass and release DNF on time, but im all out of funds!"

haha

I'll believe it when I see it. That said, wouldn't a release of DNF be a sign of the apocalypse?

If that video is in fact footage of DNF, then to be honest, it wasn't too bad. The game did look a few years old by today's standards. But it did have a lot going for it. There was pretty good lighting effects, the explosions looked cool, and the graphics were pretty smooth. I think Gearbox has the talent to update it a bit and make it competitive.

The only thing I couldn't stand was DN's voice. I don't know if it's because of the actor they got to do the voice, the stupidity of his lines, or the fact that I'm not 10 years old anymore; but it was almost physically painful to listen to it.

I'll be interested to see what happens, but I'm not holding my breath. It would be impossible for a game to deliver what 10+ years of work should deliver.

Agreed. i think the SOLE reason people are still interested is SOLELY the Nostalgia from the first game as it's almost impossible to live up to that level just like it was impossible for DooM3 to recapture the magic that the original DooM games had in the early 1990's. (and besides DooM3 was 'WOW' from a graphics standpoint in Nov 2002 when the Alpha demo leaked but by the time the full game was released in mid 2004 it lost the WOW factor from a graphics standpoint as most others games closed the gap quite a bit by then even though DooM3 was still high end visually but was not the massive leap in visuals like it was in Nov 2002 when Alpha demo leaked)

It will never live up to the hype...

If it sells well, then I think they can be happy with the result. It will get a lot of interest just because of the development history. Gearbox are solid, they will bring it together into something decent. It would be quite cool to work there. "Who wants to finish and ship DNF?!"

Ahaha, nice :).

As for Duke Nukem Forever, it would be a lot better if the game just never came out. At least back in the 3D Realms days, the game had a certain mystique to it. Many people waited patiently under the belief that it would absolutely take the FPS world by storm when it came out. If Gearbox ships this, it will be an average game at best (like most of Gearbox's work), and the whole aura of fascination will be gone forever.

Not that I care or anything. I loved Duke Nukem 3D back in the day, but the world has moved on, and I have no yearning for that franchise to return.

    • "...but it may not be Microsoft's fault" seems like a reasonable way to tease what is going on without leaving the user with a false impression that an update is the problem. A title isn't a summery, it is meant to entice the user to read the article. It should not contain a misleading premise; which this title does not. You could maybe complain that the first paragraph should have included that detail. The writing style popularized over 100 years ago in newspapers will cover the most important information as soon as possible with details and nuance added later; the idea being that with each new paragraph you have less of the reader's focus.
    • Samsung Galaxy XR arrives in the UK with new AI and enterprise features by Fiza Ali Samsung is bringing its Galaxy XR headset to the UK several months after the device made its debut as the first headset built on Google's Android XR platform. The headset was first teased in late 2024 alongside Google's introduction of Android XR before making its commercial debut in 2025. Developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, Galaxy XR combines mixed reality experiences with Gemini-powered AI features, allowing users to interact with digital content using voice, gestures, and visual inputs. While the hardware itself remains largely unchanged from the version Samsung unveiled last year, the company is using the UK launch to spotlight several software enhancements that have arrived through recent updates. Among the most notable additions is deeper integration with Google's ecosystem. Galaxy XR users can explore destinations through Google Maps' Immersive View, receiving AI-powered recommendations and contextual information from Gemini while navigating virtual environments. Furthermore, entertainment experiences have also expanded; users can watch 180-degree and 360-degree videos on YouTube, browse spatial content converted into 3D, and ask Gemini questions about on-screen content without interrupting playback. Samsung is also highlighting mixed-reality features such as Circle to Search, which allows users to identify real-world objects through hand gestures while using the headset's video pass-through mode. Another feature automatically converts photos and videos into spatial 3D experiences. Moreover, the headset now also supports Android Enterprise, allowing organisations to manage deployments using existing Android management tools. Annika Bizon, Vice President, Product and Marketing, Mobile Experience, Samsung UK & Ireland, talked about the device, stating: The headset is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform and features dual 4K Micro-OLED displays. The tech giant says that users can expect up to 2.5 hours of battery life. Samsung also confirmed that Galaxy XR will continue receiving software and security updates as the company works alongside Google and Qualcomm to expand the Android XR ecosystem. Galaxy XR is now available for pre-order and will go on sale on 8 July. Customers interested in trying the headset before launch can visit Samsung KX in London and selected Samsung Experience Stores from 17 June. Finally, the company will also host a livestream on 19 June showcasing the headset's capabilities and answering questions from prospective customers.
