Prequel series seem to be the next big thing. The latest news in prequel television actually involves a character we know from the big screen: Hannibal Lecter, the ingenious cannibalistic madman first mastered by Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs.

The series will actually follow a young Hannibal, a Hannibal long-prior to the one we met in Silence as an enemy/associate to FBI Agent Will Graham (a character played by Edward Norton in the Silence prequel Red Dragon). The series will take the form of a one-hour drama and will be written by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Heroes).

There are several ways this series can transpire; any of which will likely take some liberties with the character histories as they have been understood so far (but that's to be expected from most prequels). The show can be a sort of cat-and-mouse ordeal, with Graham chasing Hannibal, and Hannibal toying with Graham. Perhaps, in the vein of The Silence of the Lambs' plot, Hannibal and Graham can "work together" to solve crimes...from this, we could end up with something along the lines of a much darker Law & Order-style procedural (highly unlikely, thankfully), or something reminiscent of Dexter.

Think about it. Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is a killer who works to solve murders—it's his intimate understanding of the killer's mind, in a way that only a killer can understand it, that makes him so adept at his mission. That's exactly how you could describe the plot of Silence. Of course, this is no groundbreaking realization. The comparisons have been drawn many times before. But perhaps the Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising producers, in light of Dexter's popularity, are aiming to cash in on this with the original Manhunter.

Bryan Fuller’s ‘Hannibal’ gets NBC series order

We were always bullish on this one. Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal project just got a direct-to-series order. NBC has picked up 13 episodes of the thriller TV series based on Thomas Harris’ classic cannibal serial killer.

Logline: “One-hour contemporary thriller series featuring the classic characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon – FBI agent Will Graham and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship.”

So that includes some new information. Fuller is focusing on damaged FBI profiler Graham instead of Clarice Starling (popularized by Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs). Graham is the agent who captured Lecter when the psychiatrist was on his killing/eating spree.

The first question is who will play Lecter — a part that one could argue is either a dream role, or a thankless gig considering the inevitable comparisons to Anthony Hopkins’ Oscar-winning take on the character. Another question: How much will NBC push the envelope with the original tale’s gory content?

NBC’s small-screen take on the Hannibal Lecter films has found its FBI profiler.

Black Hawk Down and The Big C costar Hugh Dancy has been cast as Will Graham, the troubled and talented young FBI agent who tangles with the world’s most notorious serial killer.

Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) will write and produce the show, which has not yet cast its juicy title role. Fuller’s take on Thomas Harris’ best-selling novel Red Dragon will follow Graham as he tries to solve a series of murders and enlists the help of brilliant psychiatrist Dr. Lecter — unaware the good doctor is secretly a cannibalistic killer. NBC has ordered 13 episodes.

They are cannibalizing the cannibal. How ironic...

I love the Hannibal Lecter films (apart from perhaps the newest, Hannibal Rising which was so-so) so it will be interesting to see how this turns out.
