Sir Topham Hatt
What do Americans call the theatre? So, in the UK, you see a movie at the cinema and a musical at the theatre. But in the US, don't you call the cinema a theatre? If so, what do you go to see musicals and plays at?

ozgeek
Here in Australia we call it a "cinema" or "the pictures" or "movies" "I'm going to the cinema" "I'm going to the pictures" "I'm going to the movies"
KSib
I'm going to "the movies" I'm going to "a play" or "a show" or "the theatre." I stopped spelling it "theater" because the theatre kids would flip their s**t if you spelled it "theater" in regards to a live play as compared to one on a screen. Dinggus
"Let's go to the movies" Cinema is more of a title, like "Cinema 13". I never been to a musical or a play, but that's what I would call it anyways. "Let's go see that musical/play"
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted November 19, 2011 Subscriber² Share Posted November 19, 2011 I don't really use the word. I usually refer to whatever kind of act i'm seeing, like a play, opera, musical, film etc.
philcruicks
UK I'd say 'going to the cinema' for movies and theatre for a play/musical

Rohdekill
Americans typically use "cinema" and "the movies", depending on context. "Let's go to the movies" or "What movie is playing at the cinema?" Theater almost always involves watching a live performance.

Reacon
I go to the theatre to watch a play. I go to the theatre to watch a movie. It's pretty much synonymous and we have to specify if we're going to watch a play instead of a movie, because "movie theatre" meaning takes precedence. Sir Topham Hatt
Thanks. It's just in a trailer today I saw "coming soon to theatres" and I was like, huh? I've seen that before in many movie trailers and never really understood why they do that.
DrJohnSmitherson
"Lets go to the movies" We would call the building a theater. "Which theater are we going to?" I guess we sometimes say "Let's go to the theater (to watch a movie)"
Konstanov
English isn't my first language, I go to the movie house or cineplex to go see a film and I go to the theatre to go see a play or musical.
DocM
Midwestern US: theater can mean either, but usually a stage play. Movies can be theater, show, flick, or the name of the specific cinema - ex: AMC, Emagine, Cineplex etc.
