What Do You Call the Theatre?

What do Americans call the theatre?

So, in the UK, you see a movie at the cinema and a musical at the theatre. But in the US, don't you call the cinema a theatre? If so, what do you go to see musicals and plays at?

*Theater. I go to the movies to watch a movie. I go to the theater to watch a play.

I'm going to "the movies"

I'm going to "a play" or "a show" or "the theatre."

I stopped spelling it "theater" because the theatre kids would flip their s**t if you spelled it "theater" in regards to a live play as compared to one on a screen.

I don't really use the word. I usually refer to whatever kind of act i'm seeing, like a play, opera, musical, film etc.

Americans typically use "cinema" and "the movies", depending on context.

"Let's go to the movies"

or "What movie is playing at the cinema?"

Theater almost always involves watching a live performance.

I go to the theatre to watch a play.

I go to the theatre to watch a movie.

It's pretty much synonymous and we have to specify if we're going to watch a play instead of a movie, because "movie theatre" meaning takes precedence.

Here in Australia we call it a "cinema" or "the pictures" or "movies"

"I'm going to the cinema"

"I'm going to the pictures"

"I'm going to the movies"

Yeah that sums it up

Thanks.

It's just in a trailer today I saw "coming soon to theatres" and I was like, huh?

I've seen that before in many movie trailers and never really understood why they do that.
