Help me Design my new Portfolio

Question

Hi everyone :)

I'm making this topic because i need some help to complete my new portfolio.

When i'm designing websites or logos for others it's not big deal but when it comes to design something for me i have no idea how to start or what the final design would be.

So right now i design my Portfolio to have a nice touch of windows 8 metro start screen...

2q9z0v7.jpg

What i need is some opinions about the layout, if it's too small or too big, the color preferences and the logo.

The website will work like this:

  • The main page with my works in the middle will diplay the works i have done with slideshows and some smart design texts on 2-3 of the boxes (currently i have images there).
  • When hovering on a static image or a slidw show a information text will appear on bottom of the screen.
  • The navigation menu will have only icons but when you hover them a pop up balloon will appear on top of the icons.
  • Is it possible to make the slideshows work like i thought?
  • The position of the logo is right?

Do you guys have anything on your mind to improve the portfolio experience (maybe with some extra nice and clean css effects)?

Also what do you think about the logo?

Thank you for your time. :)

Really thank you for your help :)

The website in online now http://www.johnxde.com and it is almost complete, i only have to add previews of my works (websites and logos).

Now i don't know if i have any kind of errors in my website or useless lines of code that makes it load slowly.

Maybe i should try and replace the backgrounds with gradient but when i tried to do that at first time the gradient was not so smooth, it was like separated with lines.

Again thank you for your feedback guys and i'm looking forward to improve the website even more. :)

Small typo.

If you can design one thing, you can deisgn everything.

Now i don't know if i have any kind of errors in my website or useless lines of code that makes it load slowly.

According to the net panel in firebug, there's 1.7Mb worth of content on the homepage, so I'd definitely look into optimising where possible, even when loading virtually everything from the browser cache the total load time is ~10 seconds (and that's on a 30mbps connection).

Other than that though, it's a nice design, if a little busy for my liking (not a fan of elements that move without intervention, the previously mentioned change on hover, or even click to scroll would have been my preference for the slideshows, I think)

Thanks for the feedback guys :)

i tried to optimise the images but most of the have transparency and they are in png format.

I saw once that i can slice the website from photoshop and it will automaticaly optimise the images and it will make them in jpg with very small size, is that true?

So guys i'm coming with a new version of my website as i started to code from scratch again with clean CSS/HTML and javascript (i'm at it but i manage to make load really fast) with completely new

Design too. Well it still inspired from MS Metro interface but now the functionality is way better and it works great. Also i kept only one slideshow and the others are hover images and redirects you to each category.

I'll upload the new version really soon (once can find a good image gallery).

Here is how the website looks now, what do you think? :)

I like it. Metro with a touch of Aero imo.

It does look very clean and professional.

Again, eager to see it live.

Thank you very much the better twin.

I'll make a post here when it will be ready soon.

Thought about using a animated background? like my own website(seahorsepip.us) does, I can help with writing animations if you want and ofc I suggest using html/css/js only no unneeded flash :p

Hey guys i just updated my portfolio again and this time i went for a more minimal and clean design but it is still inspired from "Modern UI" by Microsoft. :)

Here is the old design:

And here is the new design:

and you can test live the new design here http://www.johnxde.com

I only need to fix the contact form and the website will be ready, btw do you know any simple contact form?

What are your thoughts?

    • This Dell 27 inch 4K 120Hz IPS monitor is really cheap after a very long time by Sayan Sen Recently we covered a really good deal on an AMD RX 9070 three-fan model that's available at slightly above its MSRP. If you are looking for a GPU for 1440p gaming that's around the performance of the Nvidia RTX 5070 you should most definitely check it out. Let's say that you are looking for a monitor to pair that up with too. The Samsung 49" G9 curved QD-OLED superultrawide is a good option that can provide an immersive experience. However despite being a very good deal currently (at $855), it may seem unaffordable to you, or you may simply not want to spend as much on a monitor. In that case Dell's S2725QS can be a very good option as it's on sale at the moment for its lowest price in over six months (purchase link under the specs table down below). The big highlight of the Dell S2725QS is its 27-inch IPS panel with a 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) resolution, offering a high pixel density that can make text appear sharper while also providing plenty of screen space for productivity and media consumption. The display supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz through both HDMI and DisplayPort, making it suitable not only for everyday desktop use but also for smoother gaming and scrolling. AMD FreeSync Premium support is included as well, helping reduce screen tearing during gaming sessions. The screen has fairly good brightness and color accuracy so you can use it for general work purpose, though photo/video editing is probably not going to be the best match for this. The technical specs of the Dell S2725QS are given in the table below: Specification Value Viewable Screen Size 27 in (68.58 cm) Screen Mode 4K UHD Maximum Resolution 3840 × 2160 Maximum Preset Resolution 3840 × 2160 @ 120 Hz Standard Refresh Rate 120 Hz Panel Technology In-plane Switching (IPS) Backlight Technology LED Edgelight System Pixel Density 163 PPI Response Time 8 ms GTG, 5 ms GTG, 4 ms GTG Horizontal Viewing Angle 178° Vertical Viewing Angle 178° Brightness 350 cd/m² (nits) Native Contrast Ratio 1500:1 Color Support 1.07 Billion Colors Color Gamut 99% sRGB (CIE 1931) Adaptive Sync AMD FreeSync Premium HDCP Support Yes Mount Type Panel Mount VESA Mount 100 × 100 mm Maximum Height Adjustment 13 cm Tilt -5° to 21° Swivel -30° to 30° Pivot ±90° Stand Adjustments Tilt, Swivel, Height, Pivot Glass Hardness 3H Horizontal Frequency 27–270 kHz (DisplayPort 1.4 / HDMI 2.1) Vertical Frequency 48–120 Hz (DisplayPort 1.4 / HDMI 2.1) Video Inputs 2 × HDMI 2.1 (HDCP 1.4 & 2.3), 1 × DisplayPort 1.4 (HDCP 1.4 & 2.3) Operating Temperature 0°C to 40°C Storage Temperature -20°C to 60°C Operating Humidity 10%–80% (Non-condensing) Storage Humidity 5%–95% (Non-condensing) Get it at the link below: Dell S2725QS 27-inch 4K 120Hz IPS monitor: $218.49 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) (Was: $280) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified.
