So yesterday we had our internet connection fixed, a new wire/chord outside and sometime after that I find out that our connection is slower than before went from 20 Mbps (or so) to 1.5 Mbps. So my question is, is it possible to get a better, faster connection without upgrading or not? In the past (up until yesterday) I was getting download speeds of up to 2 MB/sec and now im getting about 200 to 300 kb/sec and im a big time online gamer.

Has your internet plan changed at all? If not, go to http://speedtest.net and see if it matches up with the up/down rates listed on your router's home page (usually 192.168.1.1). If you're still not getting your expected speed, I would suggest calling your ISP.

my mom changed it awhile back (not sure when) so i guess the new cable changed to what we're paying for.

It's possible that it was just never updated, on the ISP Side. Unless the cable itself has problems, it won't be what is affecting your Internet. I know a lot of ISP's will keep what you have (speed wise) for the entire billing period, after which they will switch you. Some require a months notice, meaning the current billing period and the next one will be whatever the initial plan was, then after that time will update you.

It's possible you were never changed, and when the ISP was verifying connections noticed you were set higher than you should be.

well then im hoping that they screw up some how and accidentally put us at a higher speed in the coming weeks/months.

right now we're paying for a dismal 1.5 Mbps connection. we were at a 20 Mbps until the fix yesterday.

I dunno, speed shouldn't affect latency like that. (note the ping increase of 6x) Try testing to the same server as before... also, any changes in networking equipment? Any noticeable packet loss if you run a ping -t to a known ip address?

Better yet... run a tracert to some well known public IPs.... google dns (8.8.8.8), etc... look for any single item whose ping is significantly higher than the others around it.

"speed shouldn't affect latency like that"

There is not one mention of latency anywhere in this thread.. Did you even read it?

The problem is clear - his mom stop paying for the higher package.

The OP said "im a big time online gamer". Ping times and latency are important to online gamers because it affects their reaction time inside the game. This mostly affects FPS and fighting games.

For the same skill level, a player with 50ms latency could expect to do well. But a 250ms time would make a player do badly. This is sometimes called lag. I don't believe 24ms higher ping time would affect his playing too much!

Again -- never stated anywhere in this thread by the OP anything about any latency issues!

You do understand you can have 1.5Mbps with Ping time X, or you could have 20Mbps with the same Ping time X.. His mom reducing the package she is paying for has nothing to do with the latency on the connection. NONE!

You asking him to trace route google is completely pointless and will show NOTHING.

Sadly, you're showing how little you know about networking.

If he's concerned about gaming, it's ALL about latency... which has ZERO to with latency. You can have a network with 200k download and 5ms latency response respond better in this type of scenario than 20mb download and 100ms latency resonse. This is gaming only.

However, if a networking compent upstream of our friend here is showing high latency or low throughput, that could indicate an issue he may need to enumate to his ISP before it is resolve. I'm sure dozens if not more of us have needed to show the "expert technicians" at our isp's where the errors in our ISP networks exist before recieving reasonable speeds...

Don't be negative just to be negative please, especially when you don't know the credentials of folk you question :)

Please, re-read the original post. The guy's actual internet speed went from 20 Mbps to 1.5 Mbps. Latency is not in question here.

Not to mention the mystery was already solved: his internet service plan changed to a lower speed.

BudMan has been around here for a very long time and knows his stuff. You can go ahead and check his post history if you want to verify. I'd say that you, being the one who just joined today, should be the one proving credentials rather than a long-standing, well-known, extremely knowledgeable member.

"Sadly, you're showing how little you know about networking."

Yup you got me -- that is clearly what is happening here ;)

BTW -- Just so we're clear I understand how high latency "could be" a concern for a gamer. But the point still stands that the user has made no mention of anything of the sort.

What the OP stated very clearly

"I was getting download speeds of up to 2 MB/sec and now im getting about 200 to 300 kb/sec"

Oh network guru that you must be -- explain to us that clearly don't know as much as you how that statement, or anything else the OP has stated makes any mention of latency what so ever..

So he mentions "gamer" And his issue which clearly stated is not about the fact that his mom stop paying for the premium package and went with the budget 1.5Mbps deal but his high latency problem?

You state "(note the ping increase of 6x)" --- Where is that again? I have tried doing the maths with the numbers given 20Mbps, 1.5Mbps, 2MB/sec, 200 and 300kb/sec (which he prob meant KB) and just can not see this 6x thing your vast networking skills have shown you that us lessor minds just don't see.

You sure your not reading some other thread and posted into this one? Sorry there is nothing in this thread showing a 6x anything. But maybe there is some trick you guys with unknown credentials have to determine from numbers given in Mbps can be used to calculate latency ;)

Please show us this trick.

What is the latency to that server??

And after you do that -- may I point out again this clear as day statement from the OP

"right now we're paying for a dismal 1.5 Mbps connection"

But sure you must be right - since you know way more about networking then me it seems. Stupid ole me just not getting it, you must be right there must be some issue with his ISP that his traceroute will show that he can send to his ISP and they will fix him back up with the 20Mbps package they were paying for before ;) Other than his mom sending them a bigger check that is..

The topic arose because the OP was expressing concern about internet speeds. Part of his concern was for gaming, and latency is an issue here.

You state "(note the ping increase of 6x)" --- Where is that again? The post in this thread detailing the two speedtests that I looked at showed one ping time of 29ms and one of 5ms. This post seems to have been mysteriously "snipped". Just like my previous post was "snipped".

Judging by the empty Ping box with the arrow, it appears to have been "snipped". :(

Let's say someone is on xDSL. If they had a 20 Mbps connection they would probably be on ADSL2. If they were then changed to 1.5 Mbps, they might be on ADSL, not ADSL2. ADSL might have higher latency than ADSL2. So changing from 20 Mbps to 1.5 Mbps could badly affect their gaming.

Personally I wouldn't worry about having to play games on 1.5Mbps.

Hi. In the my opinion, without the need, we can't discovered the anything. In the modern time , the 3G and 4G have comes in the world ,the main reason is the speed . To get the more speed , we use the new device . In the my opinion, it depends upon the service provider also. Every service provider have the different speed .I think that it is a very knowledgeable forum. Thanking you.

Wow, I've been at work two minutes and I think I've had my chuckle for the day. Thanks, you two.

I have internet at my home..but i don't know how to increase internet speed without upgrade...
I'm not sure if you're genuinely a new user or this is some form of spam, but as a piece of advice you might want to be less specific with your location, and you may want to remove your phone number.

    • Zed 1.7.2 has landed with updated OpenCode models, bug fixes and other improvements by David Uzondu Zed 1.7.2 recently landed on the stable release channel, bringing a host of AI-related features including automatic context compaction and settings-based skill management, along with other things like better Markdown preview rendering and custom git commands in the graph view. Starting with the AI stuff, the developers introduced "/compact", a command that basically summarizes your conversation history on demand. This tool prevents your active chat window from hitting token limits by compressing older parts of the dialogue into a brief overview. In addition to that, the team relocated skill management to the settings UI, improving how the application communicates errors regarding those skills, and updated the OpenCode model roster to support DeepSeek V4 Flash, MiniMax M3, Qwen 3.7 Plus, and Nemotron 3 Ultra Free. External agent users can also monitor context window cost metrics and delete individual sessions directly from their history. Right-clicking ref labels in the git graph now opens a context menu that runs different actions against selected targets, kind of how VS Code does it. Here are some of the bug fixes this new release brings: The active agent fails to auto-select when creating a new git worktree. A scrollbar unexpectedly appears on wrapped code blocks in the agent chat. Collapse indicators for project headers appear when performing sidebar searches. Bracketed ellipsis title prefixes fail to show the ellipsis icon properly. Project icons render incorrectly in the recent projects picker. Diff hunk controls appear inside non-editable commit view multibuffers. The software update button hangs indefinitely on the downloading stage. Restoring an agent terminal in a remote project triggers a sudden crash. Splitting a pane that contains an active commit view causes a crash. Linux Wayland freezes when trying to read the clipboard from laggy external apps. Zed is a "newish" code editor trying to break the massive stronghold VS Code has on the developer community. Funny enough, the editor was created by former GitHub employees who worked on the Atom text editor (which Microsoft killed in 2022, several years after it bought GitHub). The project officially hit version 1.0 back in April, introducing platform parity for Windows and Linux alongside deep support for DeepSeek-V4-Pro.
    • 26H2 absolutely will support ARM Windows just not on devices that came with 26H1. This is evident by the fact I am running 26H2, which on my MacBook Neo and Surface Pro 12 (inch), within a VM.
