SimCity requires internet connection to play, will be sold outside of Origin

Good news: If you want to download SimCity somewhere other than Origin, you'll have the option to do so. An EA representative confirmed with Joystiq that the title would be available for purchase on other digital distribution platforms, though a list of stores has yet to be finalized. SimCity is arriving sometime in 2013.

Lead designer Stone Librande confirmed that SimCity would be an internet-dependent experience. Players will need to be online on Origin while playing, even if that wasn't the point of purchase. The always-on connection becomes necessary with the game's emphasis on multiplayer and regional impact, and the use of a global economy that all players can influence.

So you can buy the game on Steam but it'll require Origins to play? Whats the point of making it available on Steam then

Also, **** games that require you to be always connected.

They might as well come out and say that the "always connected" part is 100% for fighting piracy.

While they have every right to do so, it's pretty shoddy that they screw the (potential) customers out of offline play.

And if the reason is to stop piracy, it'll yet again not work, but it will stop people from purchasing it.

EDIT: PS: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

It's no different than games with Steamworks that you can purchase anywhere but still require Steam. And you're jumping the gun, nobody said it would be available on Steam, just that it would be available from other retailers.

It will be cracked within hours of the initial ISO leak and it will be downloaded in it's thousands because the price of the full game is priced at

Morons...they will never stop piracy. If anything, it will give coders a bit of a challenge to crack it rather than deter them.

This is something of a disservice to the franchise. While MMO aspects seem like they could be very interesting, the game should at least have some kind of single player mode that doesn't require a persistent connection.

Insanity goes both ways.

Crackers keep cracking over and over and over again expecting software vendors to cave in and ....

H.A.W.X. 2 Begs to differ. Seems like this was too much of a challenge for 'coders'.

I'd rather just skip it than deal with Origin. Bummer, I was sort of looking forward to it.

Only it's not insanity when you succeed every single time, if you do the same thing over and over because it works, that's not insanity

I was more specifically talking about always on connection DRM to play the game, that method has proved to not work, so doing it over and over

would be pointless.

That sucks, would be a cool game for a laptop while travelling, and no internet out in the middle of nowhere, or on a long plane flight

The no offline thing isn't an issue for me. If I can't connect I have other games I could play.

What about people that wanna play it on the road and don't have one of those mystical unlimited data plans? Or what if you don't have any friends to play it with that have it, let alone are interested in city builder type games??

City Builder games are really good to play on the road.

making a hugely successful game always on isn't exactly a smart move, Ubisoft can testify that http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/30/ubisoft-says-always-on-drm-is-a-success-fans-are-confused/. Besides, this game is gonna be cracked and pirated anyway, so the only one losing is the paying consumer, making harder to play. And if that price is legit, well...EA is definitely gonna win over Wal Mart.

Not going to buy this title if it's like this, that's for sure.

Constantly online to play the game. No thanks. My connection here is poor and I want my games offline only.

The game will also be closed to modifications unlike previous Sim City games. They will open it to mods some time "in the future, after the game launches". Which I take to mean after they nickle dime people to death with skin dlc packs and features that people would otherwise be able to add into the game on their own for free.
