Deep_Level_Shark
How many cpu cores a processor can have ? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1071171-cpu-cores/ Share on other sites
Miuku.
As many as technology allows at the time, naturally. Currently the highest "normal user" cpu are hexa-core (6) with octa-core (8) available at a premium cost. Muhammad Farrukh
As many as there can be. Currently, on the desktop processors, we have seen 8 cores, at max. Though there are processors that have more than 1000 cores Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1071171-cpu-cores/#findComment-594808299 Share on other sites
Deep_Level_Shark
Which is a good ? 2 processor box. Or. 1 processor with 2 cpu cores box Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1071171-cpu-cores/#findComment-594808301 Share on other sites
Site Lab
Depends on the processors, and what you are using it for. 1 processor with 2 cores would be like Desktop and a 2 processor box would be more like a Server (However, i think there is a sandybridge-e motherboard that supports 2 cpus....) Miuku.
A dual socket system with two hexa-cores ;-) (I only have double quad core, hoping to see a refresh in the future so I can jump up to 16 cores) Seriously though, unless you have very specific needs (that make you money, or you have so much that you don't have to care) a single socket multi-core cpu will serve all your needs. Daedroth
The amount of cores per chip depends on what the technology allows. At the moment, hex cores are around. Which is a good ? 2 processor box. Or. 1 processor with 2 cpu cores box 2 processors on one chip is better than two chips with a processor each. Why? Because you can have a dual socket motherboard, and put 2x dual core processors, which means you'd have 4 processors in total. Rather than two (one per chip). butilikethecookie
I have a 6 core right now and I have to tell you: It's fat as ****! Really there is no other way to describe it! If you REALLY need a hecta core you: A. Are someone I can Google and the only thing that comes up is a **** load dollar signs B. Are a multitasking crack head that just got done eating another crack head C. Are a serious Developer/Photographer/Gamer/business man that want to multitask like a crack head D. Multi-processor is better than multi-core... Which is a good ? 2 processor box. Or. 1 processor with 2 cpu cores box As said above, Multi-Processor is best. In a multi-core setup you're sharing processor resources between multiple cores (so a quad core CPU with 4MB of L2 CACHE will have 1MB of cache per core, for instance) whereas dual processor will have 100% of the processor resources dedicated to it. For that reason a dual processor, dual core CPU setup would be preferred over a single quad core CPU for CPU intensive tasks.
