Rumor: EA to announce a gaming deal at the Ubuntu Developer Summit

Recommended Posts

Few days back, we reported that Steam is finally heading to Linux after Michael Larabel visited Valve Offices. He also tweeted that Canonical has worked out a deal with a big game publisher and it will be announced soon.

There are already speculations, so lets speculate further. Electronic Arts (EA) has a presentation on first day (May 7th) of Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS). What could it be other then EA's plans of bringing new games Ubuntu?

Ubuntu already has a way of distributing paid proprietary games through Ubuntu Software center and Canonical is already in touch with Valve to ensure proper support of Steam on Ubuntu. Are they pitching Ubuntu as next big gaming platform?

I'm not trying to troll here and/or start an argument but I am curious would gaming on Linux be better or worse than windows if you tested the same game with the same hardware? I know Linux usually runs a lot lighter than Windows but surely if a game is made to be run on Windows it would run better? But I don't know much about Linux :/

My main concern is SLI & DX11.

hurrah for Linux getting this, although i see major issues, naming Direct X support for one, cant see MS porting it tbvh leaving OpenGL as the only viable API) so that will give support for oooh 10 titles max and EA allowing their products on steam for linux dont see that happening tbvh maybe theyll inflict the scourge known as Origin on Linux too (why should windows users only be the dammed with that POS)

Origin uses the Qt toolkit as far as I know, so porting the client to Linux should be easy.

Porting games to Linux though? I'd be rather surprised if EA all of a sudden considered Linux a viable gaming platform. We'll see what they have to announce.

Id be a bit surprised also, but a good surprised if this was indeed true. I do like various builds of Linux (although Windows is my bread and butter and my career) the lack of my games catalogue on the whole being compatible with linux always steers me back to Windows to game, would be nice to have a choice :)

Not really surprised actually, EA is milking everyone lately and they just figured that Linux is also an option for them, keep an eye out, soon Activision, THQ etc will follow. Thats just my guess.
