After a long (and slightly drunken) conversation with one of my buddies on his birthday last Tuesday, on our dependence on / addiction to technolgical gadgets he issued me this challenge: go without your smartphone for seven days.

I had to use a feature phone instead.

I didn't make it.

I found myself swiping incessantly (and fruitlessly) on the tiny screen of the Nokia 6101.

I couldn't handle pressing buttons to scroll messages.

I couldn't handle typing with that tiny keyboard.

After only three days, I started looking at my smartphone and feeling like a jilted lover.

What I DID like: Never had to charge the thing once. After three days power was at 40%.

So, could you do it?

Could I live without a smart phone? Yes. Because I'm doing that right now. I don't use my phone for anything other than texting or ringing. However, I couldn't live without other technologies, such as a computer or the Internet.

Yup, not a problem for me, only ever text between 3 people, at best I get 2-3 calls a month (not counting calls from the same person during a short period of time due to dropped calls/technical issues when they want to keep hanging up to do things), I rarely used my phone, only reason I got it was for when I am not at home and bored (for some games and what not), and any emergencies that come up, I don't use it to stay connected to any social networks (partly because I do not take part in any social networks) and I don't use it for pretty much anything beyond emergencies and boredom, so I could definitely do without it for a week, longer if need be.

Well as a prostitute I need my phone to take calls from Johns. So without my smart phone I'd not make any money and be out on the street pretty fast. So no, I couldn't live without my phone.

Bitch, you forgot your phone here again!

No Problem for me. Actualy I don't care smartphone. I can't deny that is nice to look what happens online if you drive with the train or bus. But I have also no problems without. And to phone? I phone less than a hour in the month with my mobile phone. Actually I don't need one.

Absolutely! I know it's nice to have a smartphone for my job, since I'm oncall a lot and need access to email quick, but I can definitely do without it. The longest I ever went without it was 3 weeks! I was just really close to a computer all the time lol.

The one thing I absolutely hate about feature phones (and this mostly relates to older feature phones, but still affects some feature phones of today) is capacity limits on text messages (ex: only 250 allowed in inbox, etc.)

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).

    • Then why are you still here?
