Clone Windows / partitions to another SSD

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of getting a faster SSD (Vertex 4 or alike).

However, I hate to reinstall everything I have onto this new SSD.

Is there a way to clone my Windows partition as well as other partitions of my current HDD to this newly SSD? In such a way that all linkages, installed programs, registry settings keep preserved.

I do have Acronis True Image 2012, but am not sure if this also is suited for cloning?

Or are there better (paid) alternatives?

And... can I use my Windows 7 without problems onto this cloned drive?

Acronis is about the best out there for this kind of task, I have used it several times with no problems at all, Macrium Reflect Free edition is also very very good and easy to use http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx if anything you can always make sure you don't delete or format your original drive in case you don't like the results on your new drive.

Thx. I have both True Image 2012 and Disk Director Home 11.

Both programs are capable of copying/cloning I saw.

Which one is the better one for this purpose?

And can this be done from within Windows or do I boot into "DOS" mode for this?

How do I do this?

The source disk is the one with Windows installed - and thus running - and other programs/games I use.

The target disk is the new SSD.

true image...

boot off cd or usb boot image then you can choose to clone the drive. be careful which drive you choose to clone, you could end up cloning the blank drive onto the data drive (this has happened many times to people that I know).

zeta, they are both acronis products
