how to share files on local network, messenger for chat on lan ?

Recommended Posts

HI

Is there a local messenger that can be used to chat or ping URL's or links? Also how can we share file between two local hosts?

Here is my network:

ADSL router netwrok

My laptop (win 7 x64bit home premiun) is on wifi

Brothers desktop (win XP pro) is wired to router

We just need an alternative to using pen drives to transfer sometimes just simple URL's or files. I know we can have file sharing locally (need some step by step source on that though) but mostly we share URL's which would be easy if we can have just some local chat system there without using internet but just our intranet.

Regards

Since you're using Windows, you may find this useful.

I'm not sure if it has any built-in chat functionality, and I don't have any Windows computers to try it out. I think Pidgin supports a similar protocol called Bonjour that is a local network chat protocol that lets you talk to people on your local network without traversing the internet to do it.

As far as sharing files, you could always just set up file and folder sharing between the two computers. I would just create a shared folder on the XP desktop and use that as the location for you both to drop files.
