Trying to get SMAA injector working in Source-based games...

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to get the SMAA injector working for Source-based games like Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, etc, but I'm not having any luck. I've placed it (the DX9 version, obviously) in the directories that have the executable file, but that's not working. The site shows Portal with the SMAA injector enabled, but I'm doing something wrong here.

It may just be my the drivers on this computer, so I'll try updating them and try it on my other computers when I get a chance. Was just wondering if anyone's gotten it to work and if I was putting the files in the wrong location.

Portal 2, L4D, and other newer games are segregated from HL2 with their own named executables in the common folder. This may or may not be a contributing factor.

Also, props to using SMAA. Best AA by far. Compares to x8 MSAA without blurring.

Yeah, I've tried all their own special folders and the bin folders (I read somewhere that it only works in some games if placed in the bin or bin32 folders). No such luck yet.

SMAA's definitely great. I hope more games in the future come with it as an option at launch.

(Just tried it on another PC... still not working. Gah!)

It says that it may be incompatible with the Steam overlay. If you haven't tried it already, disable the Steam overlay. You'll find it in Steam's settings in the "in-game" tab (see "Enable Steam Community In-Game").

I got it working. Here's what you have to do:

- First, install the latest DirectX runtime if you're running into any issues:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

- Place "d3d9.dll" in "Portal 2/bin/"

- Place "injector.cfg", "SMAA.fx" and "SMAA.h" in "Portal 2" (the directory with the .exe file)

It's giving me some slight problems with text and menus (I'll check to see if maybe one of the SMAA files should go in the bin folder as well), but in-game it works. I'll post comparison screens later.
