Nick H. Supervisor Posted May 7, 2012 Supervisor Share Posted May 7, 2012 My company was shutdown because the losses were too big. My company closed due to a fire. My company got shutdown because of a pancake infestation in the basement. I would imagine that any of the above would be acceptable. limok
The noun company is indefinite, so in this case we don't know which company you're talking about. If you were to say The company... then you will be speaking of a specific company making the noun definite. PL_ Veteran Posted May 7, 2012 Veteran Share Posted May 7, 2012 'got shut-down' would not be correct use imo Got = Received / Retrieved Mmm, not necessarily. Consider the future tense version: "My company will get shut down next week." Or even by changing the original round a bit: "She got fired for stealing paperclips." I'd say it's acceptable OP, but maybe somebody with formal training/knowledge can give their input. I would have to disagree I think, "My company will be shut down next week" "She was fired for stealing paper-clips" We use Got and Get in normal language, but I have a feeling it is not correct use of the word Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1075503-english/#findComment-594849775 Share on other sites
threetonesun
Ideally, you never use the word got. We use it in speech all the time, but it's a vague, not terribly descriptive verb, and it's often redundant. Got shutdown = was shutdown. "My Company was shutdown due to gross negligence." Or take, "I got a new car!" Yes, it works, but "I bought a new car!" or "my parents gave me a new car!" or "I stole a new car!" are all much more descriptive.
