Frustrated with interface and kinect

Recommended Posts

I've recently started using my xbox as a "media centre" with 4OD, iPlayer, Netflix etc and I'm starting to become a little frustrated with the overall slowness of the 360 interface when trying to load/browse the video content.

When the "apps" are loaded they are snappy enough (for the most part) if a little cumbersome to navigate it's just the opening of them that drives me mad.

Also am I the only one that constantly gets the kinect wave? at the bottom right when I'm watching iPlayer, 4OD etc.

Doesn't seem to happen with Netflix although Netflix seems super sensitive with voice commands, or should I say it seems to pick up sounds as voice commands and pauses, stops the video but when I try and actually use the voice command it doesn't recognise the command (although with being Scottish and most of these voice command systems being tailored for American people I'm not hugely surprised with that)

I suppose it's just how things work - there's no persistent app platform / framework running, so when you leave the dashboard it has to flush all the memory and resources the dashboard was using, then load and initialise the framework the applications run on, and load the Kinect libraries again (which were unloaded when you left the dashboard) and make sure that's set up, and then load the application itself (amongst all the other signing checks it does). Of course, doesn't help that none of the applications perform particularly fast, especially considering they have a tri-core 3.0Ghz processor to work with. It feels like they're only using one most of the time :p

I suppose that's why the leaked plans for the next Xbox seems to have been looking at separate RAM and processors for gaming and applications - so they can also have the application environment constantly loaded and make it faster to get in and out of.

Yeah, I suppose I shouldn't complain to much, it is an older system being retrofitted to do things it was never designed to do.

I also get the kinect wave thing, which has annoyed me enough to disconnect my kinect unless I want to use it, which is quite rare now. My apps start quickly enough for me, I suppose I'm used to it with having a three/four year old laptop, things just take time...
