mount a .bkf file?

Question

Hey All,

I have a 700GB BKF File here that was created using the standard NT Backup. Someone has brought it to me asking for help extracting certain files from it, because they cannot get NTBackup to catalog the backup file, when you select the .bkf file to restore... it does nothing.

So i was wondering if anyone knows of any free software that will let me mount the .bkf file and extract certain files from it?

MS Backup Recovery 1.0 does this really well, i can see all the files but cannot extract them as im using an evaluation version. Before i buy it... i wondered if anyone had an alternative :)

Thank You!

Ah, those .bkf files.. this was why I stopped using MS Backup early on, not only are they hard to open, but half the time they're going to be corrupt anyway. (MS Backup is apparently quite happy to create .bkf files it won't be able to open later w/o telling you anything went wrong!)

Maybe this sounds silly, have you already tried messing with it on your own w/ a Win XP machine? Personally I'd load up XP in a VM & see what I can do w/ the .bkf file. Unfortunately, it is fairly common for those .bkf files to be broken (& thus the catalog won't load), but you could always make an attempt just to be sure.

Outside of that, not sure what your options are, honestly I don't remember ever finding anything free/open source that actually worked. If that program can at least see what's in the .bkf file, maybe it's worth giving it a shot.

Hi.....sorry for being late reply. No freeware is available in the market to extract a corrupt BKF file. You can use demo version at free of cost, but there must be some limitations. There is a commercialware named as SysInfoTools BKF Repair, I have read an article about it on EzineArticles. It fixes a large sized corrupt backup file in just a couple of minutes. You can try its demo before buying it. With the help of demo version you can see the preview of your recovered data.

    • IBM are good at announcing stuff, but not at actually delivering it... How many decades ago did they announce quantum computers, and here we are in 2026, with CHINA delivering them, and IBM still talking...
    • It sounds like you’re trying to rewrite a narrative to align this layoff with your political beliefs. Games can be horrible, whatever backwards notions you have don’t change that bungie has problems, mostly with just bad games, and arrogance. When they pushed Microsoft to let them be independent they lost their way. They hired on a bunch of people and they couldn’t justify the employee count consistent with their revenue.
