I'm after a program (preferably free, but not essential) that can perform the simple task of synchronising the pictures folder to an external drive when plugged in as a mirror. Backup software like time machine seems to keep prevous versions in case of deletions/failure but I am after more of a realtime file copy. I don't know if automator can be used for this. Can anyone help?

Would like to know this as well, so my wife won't loose pictures :p

Currently, I just use dropbox which does this from my phone(s) automatically

Take a look at FolderWatch. It's in the App Store.

Check out Crashplan. The free version can do this with the software. Works flawless for me.
