The native Start menu is back, everyone rejoice!

Why should they, though?
  • It doesn't affect other people (e.g. you) that do NOT use it.
  • It doesn't affect THEM.
  • It's not a security issue.

Plus if they remove it, people would just move to other solutions anyway. So I really don't see why they should spend more effort on this rather than fixing bugs / introducing new features.

Most likely, it'll just be like UXtheme patching years ago. Remember how that always broke with updates?

This is not needed at all and hopefully Microsoft will prevent it from working with the first set of updates.

This is 100% needed, not sure what version of 8 you are using that you thing the start menu isn't needed.

Heh yeah. I always wondered why they included a theming engine like UXtheme, and only use it for ONE theme. Luna in XP and Aero after it.

@Tihiy is it possible to bring back the "Pin to Start Menu" system-wide? Right now you can only do it within the Start menu program items, but not in explorer.

It is in explorer unless you enabled 'launch folder in separate instances'. Nevertheless, it'll be fixed soon. You can drag&drop on start button instead.

I had mine to run in separate process, forgot about it until now.

Anyway, I notice that the bottom-left hot border will reappear after switching monitors or turn on dual monitor setup.

That is because it has a "brother" at the second display, which also have to be disabled :)

Can you test if it hides back if you switch to Metro and back to desktop?

I don't disable them ;)

Wrong, it's just a hook to some functions already present in Explorer, no files are altered Tihiy gave a detailed explanation of how it works on MSFN which I'd suggest reading before jumping to assumptions.

#1: Hate to be picky

#2: I don't know if anyone else has stated this, but...

If you need a 3rd party app to add functionality; it can't be called the "native" start menu.

Other than that, good work on recreating the start menu for people that need it!

from what i understand it he calls it 'native' because it's using code from windows that was thought to have been removed but only hidden

I don't get it. Instead of adding all this third party crap, why not try and get used to what is already there? :s

I prefer to call it "improve user experience" because the default one it's not enough

Because what's there sucks for some people, myself included. I won't be using 8, but if forced the first thing I'd look for is a start menu replacement, and a way to disable metro.

    • Yes, it was amusing at the time because even then dbrand was well known for stealing the designs of products from other companies. That’s what they do.
