Windows 8 New Install - SSD Alignment partition

Recommended Posts

Just insttalled a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro. With Windows 7 a new install created a 100meg partition that helped to align the master partition. With Windows 8 I can't seem to get a new install, to install that partition. Completly deleted all partitions on the drive prior to installing.

Does Windows 8 still use that small partition to deal with Alignment, bitlocker, and whatever else it uses it for?

TIA...

Xendromes right, The Os examines the install location on initial install (only if a "clean" install remember though), it recognises SSDs, aligns and remembers to disable items like Dfrag on the drive, superfetch etc.Windows 7 does it so 8 should.

Site below explains it nicely :)

Remember and do the tips on the bottom section, good idea.

Did you check if the system reserved partition was created on another hard drive?

Win 8's installer did create that system reserved partition on my SSD, but I noticed it didn't do it unless I selected the entire, empty, drive & then clicked Next to let Windows set up the partitions on its own.

e.g. if I specifically create the partition for Win 8 to be installed into, then the Win 8 installer will randomly create that reserved partition on another hard drive in my computer & boot from there, a bit annoying! Presumably it does this based on where it sees the most free hard drive space? (another way to get around this is to just unplug any other hard drives you have before running the installer)

This is a duel booting system. Windows 7 was added first, then Windows 8. I delete the everything on the SSD, including the partition. I tried my USB Windows 8 installer, and thendirectly from the CD, with no luck. When I do the installation I just highlight the drive that in unallocated, and continue with the install. It never creates the partition.

Is it possible that it's creating the reserved partition on another drive, doesn't make since to do that?

One other thing, seeing this is the added OS to make it dual booting, it's not the active drive?

TIA....

If Windows 7 already has the partition created on another drive, Windows 8 will not create a new one. I encountered this a while back. I had Windows 7 installed, when I installed 8, I added a new drive for 8, but left the 7 drive connected (so I could easily move my files over) and 8 refused to create the extra partitions on its own drive until I disconnected the other drive.

Nothing, as far as anything that could be construed as a reserved partition on any of the drives. Not sure what the problem is. Well, it?s not really a major problem, the drive shows as aligned.

I?ve been using Windows 8, off and on for the last several months. I?m at the point where I?m feeling comfortable enough to go ahead and make it my primary desktop. I?ll remove the two SSD?s and all the other drives from the mix and install Windows 8 on one of the SSD?s using the DVD. I?m guessing it won?t have any problem creating the reserved partition.

    • It sounds like you’re trying to rewrite a narrative to align this layoff with your political beliefs. Games can be horrible, whatever backwards notions you have don’t change that bungie has problems, mostly with just bad games, and arrogance. When they pushed Microsoft to let them be independent they lost their way. They hired on a bunch of people and they couldn’t justify the employee count consistent with their revenue.
