Mockups of Windows Phone 8 start screen in landscape mode

Recommended Posts

There are some elements in Windows Phone that transition beautifully from portrait to landscape mode, like the bottom app bar button icons which actually rotate inside their little circles during the rotation (have you noticed?), or the status bar elements (clock, battery, reception...)

So why not include this behavior for all the live tiles in the start scren? I created these mockups to see how it would look.

I sometimes place the phone in my car holder in landscape mode for navigation or whatever, and it's jarring to go to the start screen and have everything in portrait. Same for casual video watching. Needless to say, more important than start screen landscape mode support, should be the inclusion of a screen rotating lock!

Anyway, with this solution you'd know exactly where every tile is (layout remains unchanged), but you'll be able to actually read what's in the tiles.

What do you think?

I'd love it if the start screen could rotate like that, especially because my phone dock makes the phone dock horizontally instead of vertically. However, one thing I've noticed is that the USB connector on all of the new windows phones are all in the same spot on the bottom so that is leading me to believe that they are going for a better standard of peripherals and possibly not allowing the start screen to rotate.

yep there was really no reason it shouldn't have been able to do this on WP7 and still not in WP8 is a little disappointing wouldn't have thought it that difficult to implement but maybe its just not high on the development list.

I guess it wouldn't hurt, but I really want an orientation lock. Has anything like that been announced for WP8?

Really, no consumer features have been announced yet. We'll see what it has in store for us in a couple weeks at the press event.

For sure. Orientation lock is a must. I guess rotating the tiles might be a bit challenging with some of the custom layouts people might have (rather like widgets would get in the way of rotating).
