Not that i know of i don't believe there is a driver from sony so there shouldn't be native support until that is resolved

for the mean time you can use motionjoy and have the ps3 controller pretend to to be an xbox360 controller which has a lot of support

I'll stick with my Xbox 360 controller, then.

I plugged my PS3 controller into my PC and it worked just fine. I use it primarily with emulators on Debian Linux, but I seem to remember using it on my Windows PC as well.

I said native support. i.e. icons in games show up as the PS3 controller icons like they do with the Xbox 360 controller buttons in GfWL games.

No, Sony don't sell a wired "PC" version of the controller you have to use Bluetooth which is why it has never been picked up by developers to integrate support.

Motioninjoy works perfectly, it spoofs the PS3 pad as an Xbox controller.

The only reason PC games have the Xbox assets for buttons is because most games are just ports.

I plugged the controller in using a mini USB cable, was detected fine.

the 360 controller does it because Games for windows live supports it as a windows device by design buddy. And usually because theyre ported from the 360 versions so the game allready has the mappings and graphics for button display etc.

That's Windows picking up that you plugged it in, not something Sony did. You can't use the pad over USB either that's just for charging you have to use Bluetooth.

I can use the ps3 controller on my PC with wired connection just fine. No bluetooth needed. Needs motioninjoy though.

Motioninjoy is everything you need to get up and running a dualshock 3 controller, it works wonders even on windows 8, supports all his features plus rumble. Seriously speaking, one of the best "practical" controllers out there, comfortable enough while maintaining all the buttons at hand (plus the best directional buttons compared to other controllers), it may be not comfortable for some people though, at least for me is.

(This may sound like a commercial but... actually is one of the few things that sony did good with the playstation 3)

Actually it's because it's a requirement for GfW tagging for games that support controllers. since the button markings are standardized for all direct input or whatever it's called controllers so that players know wtf they're pressing instead of some random button that's called "controller button 5"

Which is irrelevant as GfW was dead on arrival...

XInput - it replaced DirectInput, which had way more features...

I think you're confusing GfW with GfWL. GfW is the only guarantee you have that your game s properly coded and supported. and is most definitely no dead, much less dead on arrival.

directiput may have had more features, but XInput works better, and allows the proper use of correctly marked buttons instead of "controller Button 9" and so on. As for way more features. it's a fricken input API.
