Do any PC games natively support a connected PlayStation 3 controller?

Recommended Posts

Not that i know of i don't believe there is a driver from sony so there shouldn't be native support until that is resolved

for the mean time you can use motionjoy and have the ps3 controller pretend to to be an xbox360 controller which has a lot of support

I plugged my PS3 controller into my PC and it worked just fine. I use it primarily with emulators on Debian Linux, but I seem to remember using it on my Windows PC as well.

I said native support. i.e. icons in games show up as the PS3 controller icons like they do with the Xbox 360 controller buttons in GfWL games.

No, Sony don't sell a wired "PC" version of the controller you have to use Bluetooth which is why it has never been picked up by developers to integrate support.

Motioninjoy works perfectly, it spoofs the PS3 pad as an Xbox controller.

The only reason PC games have the Xbox assets for buttons is because most games are just ports.

I plugged the controller in using a mini USB cable, was detected fine.

the 360 controller does it because Games for windows live supports it as a windows device by design buddy. And usually because theyre ported from the 360 versions so the game allready has the mappings and graphics for button display etc.

That's Windows picking up that you plugged it in, not something Sony did. You can't use the pad over USB either that's just for charging you have to use Bluetooth.

Motioninjoy is everything you need to get up and running a dualshock 3 controller, it works wonders even on windows 8, supports all his features plus rumble. Seriously speaking, one of the best "practical" controllers out there, comfortable enough while maintaining all the buttons at hand (plus the best directional buttons compared to other controllers), it may be not comfortable for some people though, at least for me is.

(This may sound like a commercial but... actually is one of the few things that sony did good with the playstation 3)

Actually it's because it's a requirement for GfW tagging for games that support controllers. since the button markings are standardized for all direct input or whatever it's called controllers so that players know wtf they're pressing instead of some random button that's called "controller button 5"

Which is irrelevant as GfW was dead on arrival...

I think you're confusing GfW with GfWL. GfW is the only guarantee you have that your game s properly coded and supported. and is most definitely no dead, much less dead on arrival.

directiput may have had more features, but XInput works better, and allows the proper use of correctly marked buttons instead of "controller Button 9" and so on. As for way more features. it's a fricken input API.

Both were DoA, how many games have used either of these? In my personal collection > 200games there is not 1 with a GfW logo!

XInput is designed only for the XBox 360 gamepad, it does not support one additional button, axis etc... it's a mess - considering that they sure as hell will change something about the controller in the next XBox, which means a new INCOMPATIBLE API instead of using a very versatile API (DirectInput)...

Why do you think they would change something, and why would that make it incompatible. Even if they did change something,it's perfectly possible to make a 2.0 version that still is fully backwards compatible while adding whatever new functions the next one has.

And the reason I've already stated, with direct input you have no idea what button does what. You have to pay the game for hours just to learn what does what, oh and then you take a break from the game and picket back up a few weeks later, oops, gotta retrain yourself on the controller instead of just intuitively picking it up.

As for games, I'm sure you have more than one game. Everything from prince of Persia to skyrim is GfW, and GfW is definitively not DoA.

And again, it's not just the Xbox controller, but all new windows compatible game controllers, who by the standard should be properly marked with the XYAB buttons and so on.

The game pad can't have any more axis and be usable anyway,it already has and supports 6 axis. Even my old Thrustmaster F16 FLCS, TQS and Pedals only had 4 axis and is about as advanced as sticks go.

    • Regarding the AI photo, I LOVE AI in that regard, you ask it what you want and it gives you a lovey photo in under a minute, that would taken me an hour to make in photoshop and it wouldn't have looked nearly as good. 2 nights ago I spent a couple hours collaborating with AI.  I did not say write me an article. I would write one or 2  paragraphs, then I would ask it to clean it up so it read better but still keeps the information I was trying to convey.  Rinse repeat.
