I have a WD TV Live Hub (1TB HDD) and that plays everything i throw at it easily (including 1080p content) and can stream from your network shares, even generate a library based off of them.
Also it has things like Youtube, Facebook, and other apps.
They're not a bad price either. They do a WD TV Live (no HDD) which has wifi for streaming too.

I have a Raspberry PI and while XBMC is nice to play around with. It just doesn't cut it when you have a WD TV in the house. Although if you're on a real tight budget then a Raspberry PI is an excellent alternative.I agree. Or maybe you could try a rasberrypi with XBMC or just XBMC on a computer or laptop (with the lid closed) . That's what I use. Pare it with a SSD and you are golden!
